Ahead of CES 2026, in addition to Samsung and LG showcasing their usual large-screen smart refrigerators, American appliance manufacturer GE also recently unveiled a model with a built-in kitchen assistant function.Profile Smart Refrigerator (GE Profile Smart Refrigerator with Kitchen Assistant).
Unlike its competitors who are pushing for larger screens, this refrigerator takes a more "pragmatic" approach—it has a built-in barcode scanner, aiming to make restocking as simple as checking out at a supermarket.
After finishing your milk, just tap "beep" and Instacart will deliver it right to your door.
This feature, known as "Scan-to-List," is the refrigerator's biggest selling point.
GE's design logic is simple: when you finish the last drop of milk or use up all the ketchup, the empty bottle is usually next to the refrigerator. At this time, the user simply picks up the empty bottle and points it at the built-in scanner in the refrigerator, and the item will be accurately added to the shopping list in the SmartHQ App on their phone.
This list not only serves as a reference for users when shopping at physical supermarkets, but also integrates with Instacart's fresh food delivery service in San Francisco. In other words, after scanning and confirming, the groceries will be automatically ordered and delivered to the user's doorstep, completely eliminating the hassle of going to the supermarket.
FridgeFocus: Keep an eye on your fruits and vegetables with a camera.
Besides helping you with grocery shopping, this refrigerator can also save you money. GE has incorporated a feature called "FridgeFocus" inside the refrigerator, which uses a camera embedded in the LED light strip to take real-time snapshots of the Crisper drawers.
This feature is primarily designed for the most expensive and perishable fruits and vegetables (such as strawberries or lettuce that you've forgotten to eat). Users can even check the inside of their refrigerator at any time via the app to avoid buying the same ingredients they already have at the supermarket, or to remind themselves to eat things that are about to expire.
8-inch touchscreen + automatic water filling technology
In terms of hardware specifications, this refrigerator features a four-door stainless steel design with door-in-door storage space and temperature-adjustable drawers. An 8-inch touchscreen is located on the top of the unit, which can be used to view recipes, weather, or issue voice commands via microphone.
Furthermore, GE's renowned water dispenser technology is also included. Built-in sensors detect the container size, and the refrigerator automatically dispenses water when the user wants to fill it, stopping precisely when the cup is full, eliminating any worries about spills.
Listing Information:The Profile smart refrigerator is expected to launch in the United States this April, with a suggested retail price of US$4899 (approximately NT$158,000).
Could returning to "physics" be smarter than AI?
GE's design approach this time is quite interesting. In the past few years, various manufacturers have tried to use AI visual recognition to determine "what was taken out" and "what was missing", but the accuracy of current technology is often unsatisfactory, for example, it may misidentify yogurt as pudding.
GE, on the other hand, took the opposite approach, using the most traditional yet most accurate barcode scanning to solve the problem. While this may not seem as futuristic, it could be more efficient in real-world use cases—after all, barcodes don't lie; what's scanned is what it is. However, with a price tag of $4899 and Instacart's current primary service area being North America, this product is likely still a ways off before it becomes widely available to ordinary households.
