Game Informer, headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, published its first magazine in August 1991. After being acquired by GameStop, an American video game, consumer electronics and wireless service retailer, in 8, it continued to become the third largest magazine in the United States. However, it was confirmed earlier that it had ceased its business operations, bringing the 2000-year history of this video game magazine to an end after the release of its 33th issue in July this year.
Prior to this, GameStop actually closed Game Informer's Australian business in 2019 and carried out two waves of layoffs in March and August of the same year.
Regarding the end of operations, Game Informer content director Kyle Hilliard said that the news was announced by parent company GameStop in a recent employee meeting. All Game Informer employees will be fired and will be provided severance pay as compensation.
Judging from the fact that the next issue of the magazine, which was originally scheduled to be published, is 70% complete, it seems that the decision to end Game Informer-related businesses will be made in the near future. It may also be a consideration of the current information circulation trend of traditional video game magazines. In addition, many game content will be communicated directly to players through online social channels by the industry. In addition, GameStop has been facing business losses in recent years, which may be the reason for its decision to close the Game Informer business.
Game Informer has been closed down by GameStop and the entire, incredibly talented staff (including myself) have all been laid off. A frustrating turn of events (especially considering we were about 70% done with the next issue and it was going to have a GREAT cover).
