Game Freak, the developer known worldwide for the Pokémon series, unveiled its new IP action role-playing game, Beast of Reincarnation, during its "Developer_Direct '26" livestream early this morning (January 23). The game is scheduled for release in the summer of 2026, breaking away from its previous close ties with Nintendo by launching simultaneously on Xbox, PC (Steam), and PlayStation 5, and will be available at launch with Game Pass Ultimate.
A girl's survival journey against a "monster" in post-apocalyptic Japan in 4026.
The story of "Beast of Reincarnation" is set in the distant future—4026 AD. At this time, Japan has been destroyed by the "Blight" disease, the landscape is covered by dense mutated forests, and human civilization is on the verge of collapse.
Players will take on the role of Emma, a cursed, amnesiac wanderer who, despite being ostracized, possesses the power to manipulate plants. Her companion, Koo, may appear to be a loyal dog, but is in reality a dangerous creature known as the "Malefact."
According to the setting, Emma, as a "Sealer", should have hunted down Ku, who was a scourge, but fate brought this human and dog together as a strange duo to travel to the far west in an attempt to sever the source of all withering disease - the "Beast of Reincarnation".
A unique "dual-track" combat system: wielding a sword with the left hand and issuing commands with the right.
Game Freak has made a rather innovative attempt at a combat system this time. The game focuses on cooperative combat between "one person and one dog," blending fast-paced action hack-and-slash with command-based RPG strategy elements.
• Emma (action):Responsible for melee damage, using a "sword" for fast-paced attacks. The core mechanic is "blocking"; accurately blocking enemy attacks not only saves your life but also accumulates points to unleash cool skills.
• Cool (strategy):Responsible for support and control, players can open the command menu at any time, which slows down the battle time (Bullet Time), giving players breathing room to think about tactics and command powerful skills to turn the tide of battle.
This design avoids the excessive pressure of pure action games that demand reflexes, while retaining the tactical depth of command-based RPGs. The game also thoughtfully provides a "story mode," which relaxes the blocking mechanics and reduces damage, allowing players who are not good at action games to enjoy the story.
