LG earlier told the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that it will launch TV products starting next year.Cancel support for ATSC 3.0 design standard, because this design standard is full of challenges and development uncertainties.
ATSC 3.0It was proposed by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) in South Korea in 2017 and subsequently approved by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission as the design standard for Next Gen TV products. It includes support for 4K 2160p resolution, 120 frames per second refresh rate, High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), wide color gamut, high dynamic range, Dolby AC-4 and MPEG-H 3D digital audio, and data broadcasting capabilities. It also supports mobile TV product designs for broadcast content delivery.
However, LG's statement that it plans to launch TV products next year without the ATSC 3.0 design standard is mainly related to the loss of a dispute with an industry player holding multiple patents related to the ATSC 3.0 design standard. Therefore, it strongly recommends that the US Federal Communications Commission intervene in the investigation of specific companies that hold patents related to the ATSC design standard but have not provided authorization in a fair and reasonable manner.
In addition to LG's announcement to cancel support for the ATSC 3.0 design standard, affordable TV brands including VIZIO and TCL have also refused to support this design standard. However, certain TV models from Sony, Hisense, and Samsung do support this design standard, and LG's previously released G2 series TVs also support it.
