The prototype "Ur-Leica" was created by Oskar Barnack, head of the testing department at Ernst Leitz Optische Werke, the optical factory in Wetzlar, Germany, which was Leica's predecessor. The prototype design was then mass-produced by company head Ernst Leitz II. The Leica I camera, which attracted great attention at the Leipzig German Exhibition in 1925, not only celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, but also became an important foundation for the subsequent development of Leica cameras.
The Leica I camera was the first milestone product in the Leica product family and the cornerstone of Leica's long-term success in the camera industry. It subsequently led to the Leica brand representing durable "Made in Germany" high-quality products, a unique imaging culture, and a solemn commitment to promoting photography.
The first Leica camera prototype was developed by Oskar Barnack in 1913, and the "Ur-Leica" prototype was completed in 1914. However, the outbreak of World War I delayed further improvements to make the camera more portable and more recognizable, while also making its I-type design more recognizable.
「Ur-Leica」同時也是第一款使用35mm規格標準電影底片的相機,更將原本電影使用的18x24mm底片規格擴大為24x36mm,並且讓底片長寬比從原本4:3變為3:2。
The prototype that Oskar Barnack persuaded Ernst Leitz II to mass-produce was actually the 31st version design proposed by Oskar Barnack. Later, a design with a 39mm thread as an interchangeable lens interface was introduced. In addition to the 50mm standard lens, a 35mm wide-angle lens and a 135mm telephoto lens were also available.
The Leica II was introduced in 1932, featuring a separate viewfinder and rangefinder. Starting with the Leica III, the shutter speed was increased, and the Leica IIIa was Oskar Barnack's last design.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Leica I camera, Leica plans to hold a number of internationally influential events this year by its various branches in Dubai, Milan, New York, Shanghai, Tokyo and other regions.
In addition, Leica Galleries around the world will host special exhibitions showcasing the outstanding work of outstanding photographers, while a series of celebratory events will be held at the Leica Camera AG headquarters in Wetzlar in June.
