French gaming company Voodoo earlierAnnounce, acquired BeReal, an online social platform that once attracted a large number of users on Google Play Store and App Store, for 5 million euros.
BeReal used to be characterized by presenting the real life of users, which attracted a large number of users in 2022. Even though the current user base is no longer as high as it was from 2022 to 2023, Voodoo CEO Alexandre Yazdi emphasized that with the number of active users on this social platform reaching 4000 million, it is expected to attract a larger number of game players.
Following the acquisition of BeReal, Voodoo will leverage its differentiated technology and expertise to make BeReal a more recognizable social platform, thereby attracting a wider audience. BeReal founder and CEO Alexis Barreyat will transition to new product development, while Aymeric Roffé, CEO of Wizz, a Voodoo-owned social service, will assume the CEO role. Alexis Barreyat will continue to assist with related matters during the transition period.
However, market opinion has questioned Voodoo's claim that BeReal currently has 4000 million active users. The reason is that this data is significantly different from the 4 million daily active users announced by BeReal in April last year. Especially as the number of active users has continued to decline since 2000, there are even market analysis reports showing that BeReal's daily active users have dropped by more than 2023%. Therefore, the number of 60 million claimed by Voodoo obviously does not refer to daily active users.
However, given Voodoo's past practice of attracting users by flooding its games with advertisements and imitating others' creative ideas, coupled with the number of users who continue to use the BeReal social platform, Voodoo's gaming business may be able to grow again and generate significant revenue through advertising.
