After years of anticipation and speculation, Microsoft Xbox finally unveiled gameplay footage of the open-world racing game *Forza Horizon 6* during the "Developer Direct '26" livestream early this morning (January 23rd). Playground Games officially confirmed that the game will be set in scenic Japan. The game is scheduled for release on May 19, 2026, for Xbox, PC, and Game Pass subscription services. Microsoft also confirmed a PlayStation 5 version will be released later in 2026.
A tourist's perspective that encapsulates the essence of Japan's landscape.
Unlike its predecessor, where players start as superstars, this time players will take on the role of a "tourist" with dreams, eager to participate in the Horizon Carnival in Japan. Design Director Torben Ellert stated that this will satisfy players' desire to explore unfamiliar lands.
The map design is not a 1:1 scale recreation, but rather a condensed essence of Japan. From majestic mountains and expansive beaches to bustling cities, players will be able to explore iconic metropolises like Tokyo. The game will recreate famous landmarks such as Shibuya Crossing and Tokyo Tower, as well as suburban streets filled with power lines and residences, and even the dockside industrial area piled with cranes.
To ensure cultural accuracy, the development team hired Kyoko Yamashitac, known as "Turbo Kyoko" in the car enthusiast community, as a cultural consultant to provide guidance. The journey won't be lonely either, as players will be accompanied by racing enthusiast Jordy and tuning expert Mei, offering local perspectives.
Integrating the culture of "empty houses" and "stamp collection" to create an exclusive mountain villa
This game introduces a brand-new promotion system called "Stamp Rally," inspired by Japan's rich stamp collecting culture, giving players clear goals during their exploration.
In terms of the real estate system, in addition to the eight unlockable player residences, a new "The Estate" mechanism has been added. The concept originates from the "Akiya" (empty houses) that appear in rural Japan due to population migration. Players will take over the idle properties passed down through generations of their partner Mei's family, and can freely expand and renovate them to create a unique racing base.
A tribute to the JDM spirit: The Black PA car and 550 new models
The "car meetups," an integral part of Japanese car culture, are also brought to life in the game. The newly added "Car Meets" system is directly inspired by the world-renowned Daikoku PA parking lot. The game features three permanent car meetup locations (Carnival, Oibuki Parking Lot, and Daikoku Parking Lot), where players can seamlessly socialize, download liveries, or admire cars.
The initial lineup will feature a record-breaking 550 vehicles, with the 2025 Toyota GR GT Prototype and 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser serving as the cover models, symbolizing the contrast between modern and traditional Japan, and between urban and rural areas.
