In an effort to attract users who prefer ad-free viewing, Anthropic announced a significant upgrade to the free version of Claude. Even those without a subscription can now use features previously exclusive to paid members, such as "File Creation," "Connectors," and "Skills."
The official announcement even included a line at the end saying "No ads in sight," clearly targeting [the target audience].ChatGPTThey've arrived.
Even free software can create PPTs and Excel files; Sonnet 4.5 is now available.
The most useful feature in this update is undoubtedly "File Generation." Since last September, this feature was only available to paid subscribers. But starting today, free users can also request Claude to generate and edit Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, and PDF files.
These file generation capabilities are powered by the higher-performance Sonnet 4.5 model (previously only available in the paid version), meaning users can simply send a bunch of data to Claude and ask it to organize it into an Excel spreadsheet or turn an article into a PowerPoint outline, all for free.
Connectors and Skills: Let AI Take Over Your Job
In addition to product profiles, the free version now also unlocks more advanced integration features:
"Connectors": Allows free users to connect Claude to third-party services. The current list of supported services is quite extensive, including design software Canva, communication software Slack, note-taking software Notion, and even automation tool Zapier and payment platform PayPal.
"Skills": These allow users to "teach" Claude to complete specific tasks in a repeatable manner. Simply put, you can have the Chatbot load specific instruction folders, scripts, or resources to make it a dedicated assistant for a particular field.
In addition, the free version has relaxed the conversation length limit, supports more interactive responses, and features improved voice and image search capabilities.
Claude's taunting skills are maxed out: He absolutely refuses to advertise.
Anthropic's timing for this update is very subtle; it's clearly aimed at OpenAI.
Just last week, OpenAI confirmed that it would insert ads into the free version of ChatGPT, while Anthropic...Super Bowl AdvertisementThe article mocked this point and subtly criticized GPT-4o for only "kissing ass." Anthropic emphasized that Claude will maintain an "ad-free" user experience, attempting to attract ad-averse users with a cleaner interface and more powerful free tools.
Analysis of viewpoints
Due to its huge operating costs (plus pressure from Microsoft), OpenAI had to start monetizing its free version (by inserting ads), while Anthropic, which was in a follower position, chose a strategy of "sacrificing short-term profits for market share".
Offering the killer feature of "generating Office documents" to free users is extremely attractive to students and document workers. Imagine that what you used to have to subscribe to Copilot or ChatGPT Plus, Claude now does for free, and without the pop-up ads that appear halfway through a chat like ChatGPT does—the difference in user experience is immediately apparent.
However, this also raises the question of how long Anthropic's funding can last. After all, the cost of inferring Sonnet 4.5 must be quite high.
