Recognizing Taiwan's pivotal role in the global high-tech and semiconductor supply chain, global express delivery company FedEx announced today (March 11th) the official opening of its newly expanded transshipment center located in the Free Trade Zone of Taoyuan International Airport. This is not only FedEx's largest single investment project in its 35-year history in Taiwan, but also significantly improves package handling efficiency by more than 2.5 times through the introduction of advanced automated sorting systems and a fully electric ground fleet. Facing increasingly complex global supply chain restructuring and the wave of AI technology, FedEx is actively strengthening its logistics infrastructure in Taiwan, helping Taiwanese tech giants and SMEs accelerate their pursuit of international business opportunities.
Doubled area, skyrocketed efficiency: 9000 parcels per hour
This newly expanded transshipment center is one of FedEx's most critical logistics upgrades in the Asia-Pacific region in recent years.
The expanded facility has doubled in size compared to the original design, reaching approximately 19000 square meters. Its most significant upgrade is the introduction of Taiwan's most advanced automated sorting system. According to official FedEx data, the new system can process up to 9000 packages per hour; compared to the old facility, the processing efficiency for imported shipments has increased by 2.5 times, and the processing efficiency for exported shipments has increased by 1.2 times.
This means that after landing, goods can go directly to the import clearance area on the first floor. Whether it is large goods carrying AI servers, cold chain products that require strict temperature control, or even dangerous goods, they can be sorted and transferred in a shorter time, which greatly shortens the overall timeliness of cross-border logistics.
Targeting the semiconductor "silicon shield": Introducing smart monitoring and digital carbon emission tracking
The biggest strategic consideration behind FedEx's massive investment is Taiwan's irreplaceable position in the global semiconductor industry.
Data shows that Taiwan's semiconductor industry output value reached NT$6.84 trillion in 2025, and it is projected to account for approximately 80% of the world's total production capacity by 2030. Transporting these chips and precision equipment, which often cost millions of US dollars, leaves no room for even the slightest delay or temperature/humidity error.
To this end, FedEx has fully implemented the FedEx Surround monitoring and intervention system, as well as SenseAware ID sensing technology, in its new transit centers. These cutting-edge technologies ensure that high-value, time-sensitive products maintain extremely high real-time visibility and strict security control at every stage of transportation.
In line with global ESG trends, FedEx also offers the Sustainability Insights (FSI) digital tool, which allows large technology companies and small and medium-sized enterprise customers to directly assess and manage the carbon emissions of eligible shipments and easily generate carbon footprint reports that meet international standards.
Green Transition: Ground Support Fleet Fully Electrified
It's worth mentioning that FedEx not only upgraded its system this time, but also completely "greened" its hardware.
The new transit center leads the industry by fully upgrading its ground support equipment fleet to electric trailers, officially bidding farewell to traditional diesel vehicles. Coupled with comprehensive airside charging facilities, it is estimated that each electric trailer can reduce CO2 emissions by 21 to 26 kilograms per day. This not only substantially reduces noise pollution and carbon emissions in the airport operating area but also echoes FedEx's ambitious goal of achieving global operational carbon neutrality by 2040.
