Facebook groups can finally speak without using real names: Meta introduces features for customizing nicknames and profile pictures, enabling semi-anonymous interaction.
It requires administrator activation and allows users to freely switch identities, lowering the barrier to entry for speaking and attracting younger users back.

Meta has long maintained a policy requiring Facebook users to use their "real names," with a few exceptions, but this has always been a major concern regarding user privacy. However, regarding the Facebook Groups feature, Meta recently announced...New options will be provided. It allows community members to use custom nicknames and unique avatars to participate in discussions, no longer forcing them to display their real names, or only allowing them to post anonymously with complete invisibility.

Facebook groups can finally speak without using real names: Meta introduces features for customizing nicknames and profile pictures, enabling semi-anonymous interaction.

The "Anonymous Posting" setting requires administrator activation.

According to MetaExplainThis feature is quite intuitive to use; users can set a custom nickname using the same toggle switch as "Create Anonymous Post".

However, this is not enabled by default across all platforms. The nickname function must be enabled by the administrators of each community, and in some cases, nicknames may even require individual review and approval. Once set up, users can freely switch between using their real name or nickname when speaking within that community.

The only limitation is that these nicknames must still comply with Meta's existing community guidelines and terms of service. When setting a nickname, users can also choose from a set of custom avatars; currently, the options seem to mainly consist of images of "cute animals wearing sunglasses."

Rescuing user churn and making community interactions more comfortable

Community groups have been a key area for Meta in recent years in its efforts to win back users (especially younger demographics). Following the introduction of a page emphasizing local activities in 2024 and the recent addition of a tool for administrators to turn private communities into public ones, the newly launched nickname feature is clearly aimed at further reducing the psychological burden on users when speaking.

While a change to a single feature may not allow Facebook to regain its status as a social hub from the early 2000s, allowing semi-anonymity mechanisms such as "usernames" could encourage users to explore new communities more freely and participate more actively in discussions.
