Similar to the rainbow photo filter creation tool launched previously, Facebook allows users to create their own special effects photo frames and share them with others after being reviewed by Facebook.
The newly released special effect frames are primarily designed for use with personal Facebook profile pictures, and are available in two types: standard frames and special frames that can only be accessed at specific locations. The latter, similar to Snapchat's unique filters, require specific locations to download and use. These frames utilize the user's location through the smartphone's built-in GPS and can be used to attract crowds in conjunction with specific in-store promotions, competitions, or charity events.
Any user can participate in the design of special effects photo frames, but they will be reviewed by Facebook officials before being made available for download and use through a service similar to a sticker store. Creators can also confirm data such as the number of times their personally designed special photo frames have been downloaded and used through the special photo frame display page.
