Engaged in a tug-of-war with Waymo in the robotaxi market, and currently owned by Amazon, [the company/entity]...zoox, earlierAnnounceA major expansion plan. Following the official launch of commercial services in September 2025, Zoox has confirmed that it will bring its "face-to-face" steering wheel-less native self-driving car to Austin, Texas and Miami, Florida for the first time. It will also expand its services in San Francisco and Las Vegas, where its operations are already well-established, including adding more stops at most hotels on the Las Vegas Strip and adding popular attractions in the eastern half of San Francisco, accelerating its efforts to catch up with market leader Waymo.
Expanding into the Southern Twin Cities: Austin and Miami Added to the Scope
Zoox has been deploying modified vehicles for road testing in Austin and Miami since 2024, but the significance of this announcement is that the company will officially launch a specially built steering wheel-less prototype.
Initially, the service will be available to Zoox employees and their families, and operations will be limited to specific areas in two cities. Once the test data stabilizes, Zoox plans to open the service to the general public, following its announcement in March of its expansion into other markets.Dallas and PhoenixThis follows Zoox's most aggressive interstate expansion recently.
In-depth operations: Full coverage of the Las Vegas hotel complex and the East Side of San Francisco.
In addition to developing new cities, Zoox has also significantly increased its penetration rate in existing markets:
• Las Vegas:Zoox now serves most major hotels and convention centers (LVCCs) on the Las Vegas Strip, and can even handle high-traffic events like The Sphere Arena and T-Mobile Arena. Future plans include extending its routes to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS).
• San Francisco:Starting this spring, the service will cover the prime areas of eastern San Francisco, including Marina, North Beach, Chinatown, Pacific Heights, and the coastal Embarcadero.
Enhanced Experience: Find My Zoox and Personalized Audio
Along with its expansion, Zoox has also updated two product features to optimize the passenger experience in complex environments:
• "Find My Zoox":The vehicles will use a unique combination of lights and sound cues to make it easier for passengers to identify their booked vehicles in crowded hotel entrances or event venues.
• "Zooxcast":Passengers can connect to the audio system via Bluetooth to play their favorite music or podcasts while inside the vehicle.
Analysis of viewpoints
Zoox's development strategy presents an interesting contrast to Waymo's.
Waymo adopted a "hardware modification, rapid deployment" model, installing sensors on Jaguar I-Pace or Geely-partnered vehicles and quickly expanding its reach across major cities in the United States. Zoox, on the other hand, took a "premium and highly vertically integrated" approach, insisting on using its own designed, four-seater vehicles that resemble mobile cabins. While this design is slower in terms of mass production and cross-regional regulatory applications, it is extremely attractive in terms of user experience.
Furthermore, entering Austin and Miami holds significant strategic importance for Zoox. Austin is Tesla and Elon Musk's "territory," while Miami is one of the most important technology hubs in the southern United States. As Waymo gradually integrates the native self-driving car models it co-developed with Geely, these two giants will eventually face off head-on in the "native self-driving car" race.
Zoox's major expansion is undoubtedly a demonstration to its parent company Amazon and investors that even though it started later, it has the strength to compete with Waymo in terms of service sophistication and geographic coverage.
