An artificial intelligence startup founded in Tokyo, Japan by two former Google researchers, Leon Jones and David HaSakana AI, claiming to create a new model architecture inspired by nature, allowing users to build their own automatically generated artificial intelligence.
Prior to this, Leon Jones participated in a paper published by Google in 2017, which was regarded as a catalyst for the subsequent automatic generation of artificial intelligence."Attention Is All You Need"It describes the large-scale natural language model Transformer created by the Google Brain team at the time, which later became the basis for artificial intelligence application services such as ChatGPT under OpenAI.
Leon Jones left Google in August after working there for more than 10 years.
As for David Ha, he joined the Google Brain team in 2016 and served as the head of the Google Brain Tokyo team in 2017. He later left Google in 2022 and joined Stability AI as research director, but left in June this year.
Sakana AI, an artificial intelligence startup founded by Leon Jones and David Ha, takes its name from the Japanese word for “fish” (さかな), a reference to the phenomenon of schools of fish following simple rules.

According to the two founders, current artificial intelligence is largely limited to immutable model structures. Therefore, they hope to develop AI that can adapt to changes in the natural environment, much like the behavior of a school of fish. Furthermore, the decision to establish the company's headquarters in Tokyo was driven not only by the desire to avoid competition for talent with other companies in the United States, but also by the availability of high-quality technical talent in Japan and the potential for greater connectivity to the international market.
In addition, the two founders believe that although Google is currently fully committed to the development of automatically generated artificial intelligence technology, it has too many framework limitations, making technological innovation relatively difficult.
