Previously, 80% of advertising revenue was used to protect the earth's rainforests.Ecosia search engine, and the French search engine Qwant, which claims to be privacy-focused,Announcement of cooperation, jointly established a new company called European Search Perspective (EUSP), which is expected to build a search engine in Europe that is suitable for local regulations and usage needs, thereby reducing the long-term reliance of local users on Google or Microsoft to provide search engines.
The new company will be held 50% by Ecosia and 50% by Qwant. It will leverage Qwant's technology, which was rebuilt last year, to enhance the search experience primarily in French and German. Qwant's current CEO, Olivier Abecassis, will serve as CEO of the new company, aiming to give European companies greater autonomy in the development of search engine technology.
Previously, Ecosia's services used Microsoft's Bing search technology, but later adopted a combination of Google and Bing search results, while Qwant primarily uses Bing search results. The search engine technology developed by the newly established company will be designed with user privacy as a primary design principle and will be used by Ecosia, Qwant, and other independent search engines. The technology is expected to be available as early as the first quarter of 2025.
In addition, Ecosia and Qwant will maintain their respective external partnerships and ensure that applications using their search engine technology can provide the best user experience.
Google currently holds nearly 90% of global search engine usage, followed by Microsoft Bing, Yahoo Search, and Baidu and Yandex. Search services like Ecosia, Qwant, and DuckDuckGo largely rely on search engine technology provided by Google or Microsoft. Therefore, Ecosia and Qwant hope to develop new search engine technology through their joint venture, thereby breaking away from their reliance on external technology.
