Apple announced that it would terminate EPIC Games' developer account rights on August 8, and emphasizedNo relaxation of regulations for specific manufacturersAfterwards, in addition to seeking court assistance to stop Apple from doing this, Epic Games seemed to be preparing to form an alliance to fight against Apple to protest its profit-sharing policy of varying 30%.
According to reports, Epic Games is expected to join hands with other companies that also take a 30% profit share from Apple in varying proportions, and put pressure on Apple by jointly forming an anti-alliance.
Spotify and other companies that have also expressed dissatisfaction with Apple's profit-sharing policy in the past may join Epic Games in proposing an alliance. If successful, this could potentially attract support from even more companies that are dissatisfied with Apple's policies but have chosen to cooperate.
Based on previous situations, Epic Games believes that Apple's 30% profit share is unreasonable. It also believes that adding a required in-app payment mechanism at Apple's request is just to provide players with more payment options and does not violate the App Store usage regulations.
However, Apple believes that Epic Games deliberately added a direct payment option, which is equivalent to making the in-app payment option meaningless. Therefore, it believes that Epic Games' move clearly violates the App Store usage guidelines and demands adjustments. Otherwise, Epic Games' developer account permissions will be terminated after August 8.
In its previous battle with Spotify, Apple emphasized that a 30% commission rate was a very reasonable proportion, which was mainly used for the operation, development and maintenance of the App Store platform, and would also be adjusted based on the actual usage of the App. However, from Spotify's perspective, it believes that Apple's commission rate is still too high and may even cause operational burdens for developers.
It is not certain whether Epic Games is indeed ready to form an alliance with more companies to fight against Apple, but it may cause Apple to face a lot of market disputes.
