EPIC Games earlier requested the court to restore the game content such as "Fortnite" to Apple and restore itsDeveloper account permissions.
According to EPIC Games, it hopes to change Apple's past monopoly behavior of dominating the platform and controlling the revenue distribution of app content. It hopes that Apple will change the App Store operating model and allow consumers to have more content source options, thereby allowing more platforms to compete in a fair manner.
From Apple's perspective, it would naturally believe that Epic Games is attempting to undermine the existing operating model. After all, platform maintenance and development require a certain amount of revenue support. Therefore, it is not unreasonable to believe that it can use the scale of the platform to gather usage demand and collect a portion of the revenue from the paid portion as platform operating support costs.
However, from the perspective of more developers, they believe that Apple's profit-sharing policy lacks transparency and even has unfair profit-sharing ratios. For example, in order to attract Amazon to join, Apple specifically limited Amazon's profit share to only 15%. At the same time, it refused to list streaming game companies on the grounds that it was unable to evaluate game ratings and other information one by one. It even refused to list Facebook apps that included game sales. This makes people question whether Apple is deliberately restricting the listing of apps that may affect the sales of its own game content, or apps that are difficult to collect profit shares from.
From an operational perspective, Apple will naturally not accept Epic Games' proposal. However, if developers follow the practices of Spotify and Netflix and maintain Apple's online payment mechanism in the iOS platform app, but on the other hand also provide consumers with a direct payment subscription mechanism through the official website to avoid the "Apple tax", this is obviously an approach that Apple can accept. Therefore, many developers actually adopt the same model, allowing consumers to pay through external means and log in to the iOS platform app with the same account.
Currently, Epic Games believes that it is challenging Apple's authoritarian practices and safeguarding the rights of developers and consumers. Developers are more concerned about whether their content developed using Unreal Engine will be affected. As for consumers, they are naturally more concerned about whether Epic Games' games can return to the iOS platform as soon as possible, or whether content developed using Unreal Engine can continue to be used.
