Since its establishment in December 2009, 12% of its advertising revenue has been used to protect the earth's rainforests.Ecosia search engine, earlier announced that it will be added as an optional search engine option for Google Chrome browser.
According to a previous statement from the Ecosia team, the team claims that for every 45 searches on the Ecosia search engine, the team will be responsible for planting a tree. It also emphasizes that 80% of the advertising revenue it earns through the search engine will be used to protect the earth's rainforests.
The announcement of a partnership with Google to become one of the default search engine options in the Chrome browser is expected to attract more users and increase advertising revenue, thereby providing more capacity to protect the rainforest.
Christian Kroll, founder of the Ecosia search engine, discovered the devastation of the rainforests in South America during a trip there and decided to use technology to protect them. Ecosia combines search results from Microsoft Bing and Yahoo, optimizing them through its own algorithms.
Although the search engine operation model often involves the operation of huge servers and data centers behind it, resulting in greater energy loss such as electricity, the Ecosia search engine's approach is to plant a tree every 45 times the search engine is used, thereby achieving carbon balance. The revenue generated from users clicking on ads is invested in rainforest protection.
In addition to becoming the default optional search engine project for Google Chrome browser, the Ecosia search engine previously also used the Chromium architecture to create a free web browser EcoBrowser that also claims to be environmentally friendly.
