EA earlierAnnounce, will establish a partnership with Stability AI, the developer of the AI image generation tool Stable Diffusion. The two parties aim to "jointly develop transformative AI models, tools, and workflows" in the hope of accelerating game development while maintaining quality.
AI as a "smarter brush" improves the efficiency of material and environment construction
In the announcement, EA SPORTS Technical Art Director Steve Kestell described the collaboration as providing "smarter paintbrushes," with the goal of giving creatives more powerful tools to express their ideas.
Initially, these "smart brushes" will be used primarily for the generation of in-game textures and assets. EA specifically mentioned that they hope to use the new tools to create physically based rendering (PBR) materials, which can generate 2D textures that maintain accurate color and lighting in any environment.
In addition, EA also described the possibility of using AI technology to pre-visualize the entire 3D environment through a series of clear prompts, allowing artists to more creatively guide the generation of game content.
The gaming industry embraces AI, but EA may consider cost pressures
This cooperation also echoes the current trend of senior executives in the gaming industry paying general attention to AI technology.
Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two Interactive's CEO Strauss Zelnick recently stated that generative AI will not reduce employment, but rather increase it, because the technology can boost productivity. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds publisher Krafton has even explicitly announced its transformation into an "AI-first" company. Companies with direct AI interests, such as Microsoft, have already released tools and development models specifically for gaming.
However, for EA, the motivation to introduce AI may be more direct.PrivatizationIn the process, EA will be burdened with billions of dollars in debt after the transaction is completed. Therefore, in theory, AI assistance will be able to reduce development costs, which may be one of the ways EA hopes to use to survive the transformation period.
