DuckDuckGo, a search engine that emphasizes privacy protection and user experience, recently launched a new image filtering function to address the prevalence of AI-generated content, allowing users to actively choose whether to display AI-generated image content.
This update has been integrated into the DuckDuckGo browser. When users perform image searches, they will see a new "AI Images" drop-down menu with options such as "Show All," "Show Only AI Images," or "Exclude AI Images." Users can customize search results according to their needs to avoid being overwhelmed by meaningless or misleading AI image content.
DuckDuckGo stated that the technology behind this filtering feature is based on open-source blocklists maintained by communities such as uBlockOrigin. While it cannot guarantee 100% blocking of all AI-generated images, it has already significantly reduced the proportion of AI-generated content in search results. The company also emphasized that it will continue to introduce more advanced filters to further improve search quality.
New setting: hide AI-generated images in DuckDuckGo
Our philosophy about AI features is “private, useful, and optional.” Our goal is to help you find what you're looking for. You should decide for yourself how much AI you want in your life – or if you want any at all. (1/4) pic.twitter.com/pTolmsEQlQ

This feature is a clear response to the AI image chaos Google Search has faced in recent years. DuckDuckGo specifically used "baby peacock" as an example because, as early as a year ago, internet users discovered that when searching for this keyword, Google search results often displayed unnatural, misproportioned, or non-existent AI-generated images.
Even though Google has subsequently made some adjustments to its image search results, it remains unable to eradicate the prevalence of AI-generated content. DuckDuckGo, by offering a simple and intuitive way for users to verify the authenticity of image sources, not only addresses a real-world pain point but also has the potential to become a new benchmark for other search platforms.
It's worth noting that DuckDuckGo has always prioritized privacy and clean search results. The addition of AI image filtering further demonstrates its commitment to maintaining trustworthy online content and search quality. While this feature is still undergoing refinement, it demonstrates that DuckDuckGo is more forward-thinking and proactive than mainstream search engines in terms of information filtering and transparency.
