DJI launched this yearThe new generation of lightweight flagship drone, Mini 5 ProWhile maintaining a lightweight design of less than 250 grams, it brings significant hardware and functional evolution. Not only has it been upgraded with a 1-inch, 5000-megapixel image sensor, but it has also incorporated night-time LiDAR sensing technology for the first time. At the same time, its battery life, obstacle avoidance, and tracking capabilities have been comprehensively enhanced, making the Mini series a professional-grade creative tool.

Continuing the lightweight design, it is a complete version that represents a generational evolution.

Building upon its lightweight design of less than 250 grams, DJI's Mini 5 Pro launched this year is not only an "upgrade of the previous generation," but also a turning point for the Mini series to officially enter the professional field.

This new aircraft weighs 249.9 grams (note), but its overall structure and fuselage details are more robust. While the fuselage is slightly larger and taller, its flight stability is significantly improved, especially in winds of around force 8, where its flight attitude remains remarkably stable. For users familiar with the Mini series, this improvement in stability is particularly noticeable.

Note:Product weight may vary due to different batches of materials, with an actual weight of approximately 249.9 grams and a weight error of ±4 grams. If the maximum takeoff weight includes the DJI Mini 5 Pro smart flight battery and micro SD memory card, registration with the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) is still required in accordance with regulations (registration is mandatory if the maximum takeoff weight on the CAAC website is greater than 250 grams).

The most obvious change in appearance is the new sensor located at the front of the aircraft—the forward-facing LiDAR sensing module.

LiDAR sensors: a true "safety gate" for nighttime flight.

LiDAR technology has been commonly found in automobiles, autonomous vehicles, or high-end models in the past. This time, it appears for the first time in the Mini series, taking the Mini 5 Pro's performance in dark environments to a new level.

In actual testing, when flying in a low-light environment of only about 1 lux (about the level of a street lamp at night), LiDAR was able to stably detect obstacles ahead and actively avoid walls or tree branches. At the same time, it could still automatically return to home through the fusion algorithm of LiDAR and vision when the GPS signal was insufficient.

▲ Achieving more agile and faster obstacle avoidance through LiDAR

The greatest significance of this change is that night shooting and low-light shooting have finally become safe and controllable.

In the past, when using the Mini 4 Pro for night shooting, it was often necessary to rely on ambient light or manually control obstacle avoidance sensitivity. Now, the Mini 5 Pro's LiDAR can almost "see the dark," making flying in low-light environments no longer thrilling.

This is a huge improvement for creators who enjoy shooting dynamic footage in nighttime cities or at events.

1-inch image sensor: A fundamental leap in image quality and detail

The Mini 5 Pro adopts a 1-inch, 5000-megapixel sensor, which is the first time the Mini series has introduced a camera module of the same level as the DJI Air 3S. This means that the image quality of the Mini 5 Pro will be comparable to that of mainstream models.

▲The Mini 5 Pro adopts a 1-inch, 5000-megapixel sensor, the same camera module as the DJI Air 3S.

In low-light shooting, the Mini 5 Pro captures significantly less noise and smoother tones in shadows. Compared to the 1/1.3-inch sensor used in the Mini 4 Pro, it provides nearly twice the amount of detail in shadows, while the overall image brightness distribution is also more natural.

In shooting city skylines after sunset, the Mini 5 Pro can clearly present the sense of layering between bright areas (such as signs and streetlights) and dark areas (building shadows), without overexposure or out-of-focus issues.

In addition, the Mini 5 Pro supports 4K 120fps video recording, 10-bit D-LogM color mode, and has up to 14 levels of dynamic range adjustment. In actual subsequent shooting, the Mini 5 Pro shooting content can be directly mixed and edited with the shooting content of the Air 3S or Mavic 3 Pro models, and the color performance and saturation can be almost directly connected.

For video creators, this means that the Mini series, which was mostly used as an auxiliary angle for shooting in the past, can finally be used as one of the main shooting positions starting with the Mini 5 Pro.

Gimbal and lens design: more freedom of angle, more stable footage

The Mini 5 Pro's three-axis gimbal has also been upgraded, allowing it to rotate up to 225 degrees and support true vertical shooting.

This means that when shooting Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, or TikTok videos, you can no longer only obtain a vertical image through cropping, but also shoot a native vertical view by rotating the lens, preserving the full 4K resolution image details.

In addition, the newly added "Rotating Short Film" sub-mode allows users to quickly create 360° rotating camera effects. In actual testing, simply setting the start and end waypoints allows the aircraft to automatically complete a smooth rotation shot, with image stability even more natural than the previous generation's manual control.

The ActiveTrack 360 feature, which can automatically track moving subjects, has also been evolved with the launch of the Mini 5 Pro. The ability to adjust the tracking path according to the dynamic environment and lighting conditions, combined with the Mini 5 Pro's added omnidirectional obstacle avoidance and LiDAR sensing functions, can maintain a safe distance even in narrow areas, achieving the ideal of "intelligent tracking without collision".

Battery life and charging efficiency: longer, faster, more practical

The Mini 5 Pro's standard battery provides 36 minutes of flight time, a slight improvement over the previous generation Mini 4 Pro's 34 minutes. When using the Plus Battery, the flight time can be extended to 52 minutes.

When paired with the 65W bidirectional charging hub, it can fully charge three batteries in approximately 115 minutes. In actual testing, a complete outdoor shoot (approximately 90 minutes of flight + round-trip location scouting) only requires about two batteries to complete all the footage shooting. Such battery life obviously offers greater efficiency and flexibility for commercial photographers, documentary filmmakers, or travel video creators.

Impressions of video and flight testing

In actual flight shooting, the Mini 5 Pro's performance was amazing. In backlit shots, the details of the sky and clouds were preserved intact, and the dark areas were no longer blurred. In night shooting scenarios, the LiDAR obstacle avoidance combined with the omnidirectional vision system operated stably, and it could automatically correct its path even when taking off and landing in near-total darkness.

The 4K 120fps slow-motion footage is incredibly dramatic after editing, and the 10-bit D-LogM further expands the color post-processing capabilities. When paired with the DJI RC 2 controller, the live preview video is significantly smoother than the previous O4 system.

Suitable user groups and market positioning analysis

• Photographers and content creators:
When using mid-to-high-end drones such as the Air 3S and Mavic 3 Pro simultaneously, the Mini 5 Pro's color reproduction and material consistency make the editing more natural. It can also be used as a "second-view camera" to provide reshoots and low-altitude dynamic footage.

• Outdoor travel photographer:
Weighing less than 250 grams and requiring no flight permit, it still delivers near-professional image quality. It's an ideal choice for travel photographers and outdoor creators to carry with them.

• For beginners taking aerial shots:
For novice users, the LiDAR obstacle avoidance and omnidirectional collision avoidance system lowers the barrier to entry. Even on the first flight, it can safely return to base in low-light conditions.

Conclusion: The intersection of lightweight and professional

The DJI Mini 5 Pro is not just a routine upgrade of its predecessor, but a turning point that officially puts the Mini series into the "professional" category.

The 1-inch sensor brings a comprehensive improvement in image quality, color consistency and dynamic range, while the night LiDAR sensor redefines the safety standards for low-light flight, making "night aerial photography" a practical shooting option and allowing lightweight models to have a place in professional video production processes.

For users who want to "travel light without compromising image quality", the Mini 5 Pro will be one of the most comprehensive options on the market.
