The Information websiteSources have reported that Disney plans to add scheduled content similar to cable TV channels to its streaming video service Disney+, thereby attracting users to spend more time watching content on the app and increasing revenue through built-in advertising.
The news further stated that Disney may provide popular content such as "Star Wars", Marvel series, or Pixar animated films in this way to attract more users to use the Disney+ service, while balancing the playback costs through built-in advertising.
Similar practices have been adopted by companies including Samsung, Roku, and Pluto TV, which have already launched advertising-supported playback costs and provide scheduled video services for free to attract more users. Disney's ABC.com app also offers some channel content supported by advertising, but it has not previously appeared in the Disney+ subscription service.
It is not yet clear how Disney will integrate advertising-supported content and time-based broadcasting into the Disney+ service, which is used for monthly subscriptions. It may be possible to attract more people to watch and use it based on the latter, and then attract more people to pay for subscriptions.
In a similar approach, Netflix has previously been rumored to be planning to add content with advertising-supported playback costs to its service in order to attract more people to use its service.
