8BitDo, a peripheral manufacturer known for its various retro-style game controllers, unveiled a rather interesting product at CES 2026. This new phone controller, called FlipPad, is unlike most controllers on the market that clip onto the sides of a phone; it is specifically designed for a "portrait mode" gaming experience.
Unique flip-top design recreates the feel of a handheld game console.
According to the official video, the FlipPad connects directly to the phone via a USB-C interface. Its most distinctive feature is its unique hinge design, which allows the controller to be stored like a protective cover (or folded back) when not in use, and then flipped up to fit against the lower half of the phone screen.
In terms of button layout, the FlipPad has a strong retro feel. You can see the classic D-pad, the iconic purple ABXY buttons (similar to the classic color scheme of the American Super Nintendo), and the select and start buttons. In addition, the panel also features six auxiliary buttons whose functions are not yet labeled, presumably for custom macro settings or corresponding mobile phone system operations.
Supported by Apple, compatible with both platforms.
8BitDo emphasizes that FlipPad will be compatible with both iOS and Android devices, and specifically mentions in the post that the controller is officially supported by Apple, meaning that iPhone models such as the iPhone 15, 16, and 17 that use USB-C will have a more seamless connection and button compatibility experience.
The 8BitDo FlipPad is expected to be officially launched in the summer of 2026, but detailed pricing and full specifications have not yet been announced.
