The most criticized issue with the Magic Keyboard accessory currently used with the new iPad Pro and iPad Air is probably the angle at which it is opened. However, new patent applications show that Apple plans to redesign this accessory and make the usage angle more suitable for demand.
While the Magic Keyboard's enhanced button design and larger trackpad make it a more user-friendly 2-in-1 device, and compatible with Apple Pencil for handwriting and doodles, the Magic Keyboard's hinge structure and fixed design limit the angle of the keyboard when unfolded. This can make hand movements unnatural if handwriting is required, requiring the iPad Pro or iPad Air to be removed and laid flat for easier handwriting.
However, this also affects the smooth experience of using the keyboard to input text, so many creators will choose third-party keyboard accessories such as those launched by Logitech.
Apple's earlier patent application suggests it's preparing a new keyboard design. This will utilize a repositionable mechanism within the keyboard, allowing the iPad Pro or iPad Air to accommodate a wider range of angles, including a low-angle mode for easier hand-drawing. Furthermore, the overall mechanism will likely not retain the current hinge design, with the focus likely being on the repositionable mechanism at the bottom of the keyboard.
However, it is not certain when Apple expects to turn this design patent into a real product for sale. It may not be confirmed until next spring at the earliest.
