At MWC 2026, Corning unveiled its toughest protective material ever—Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3. This next-generation product, blending glass and ceramic science, not only demonstrated overwhelming durability in rigorous drop tests on concrete and asphalt surfaces, but also confirmed its upcoming use by Motorola.large-size foldable phone Razr FoldIt is the first in the world to be equipped with this technology.
A research and development philosophy shifting from "initial performance" to "long-term durability".
For Corning, the development goals for the new glass have gone beyond simply achieving laboratory benchmark scores.
Lori Hamilton, Vice President and Commercial Technology Director of Corning Gorilla Glass, emphasized that the core of the development of Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 lies in "long-lasting durability." Leveraging Corning's deep technological expertise in glass and ceramics, this new material aims to provide stable protection that can truly withstand the test of time and everyday accidents, ensuring that devices remain robust even after long-term use.
Pushing the limits of real-world drop testing: a dual test of concrete and asphalt.
To accurately reflect the most common fatal accidents encountered by consumers in daily use, Corning Laboratories conducts extreme tests on a variety of demanding surfaces:
2-meter concrete drop test: When faced with the most challenging impact surface for consumer devices—simulated concrete—Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 successfully withstood direct drop impacts from a height of over 2 meters.
More than 20 repeated drops on asphalt surfaces: In repeated drop tests simulating an asphalt surface from a height of 1 meter, Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 also demonstrated remarkable fatigue resistance, withstanding at least 20 repeated impacts. In contrast, the traditional aluminosilicate glass used by competing products typically shatters on the first drop, highlighting the absolute advantage of glass-ceramic technology in long-term durability.
Motorola razr fold secures global debut
For the foldable phone market, where screen protection is of paramount importance, this breakthrough in material technology is undoubtedly a shot in the arm.
Leo Liu, Vice President of Product Development at Motorola, stated that consumers have always expected mobile phones to be robust and durable in everyday use. Integrating Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 into the upcoming next-generation foldable phone, the razr fold, not only significantly enhances the product's physical protection but also fulfills Motorola's commitment to providing devices consumers can rely on for the long term. This also means the razr fold will be the first smartphone on the market to feature this flagship-level protective glass ceramic.
