Contrary to ChatGPT, Anthropic promised Claude would not include any advertisements.
Violating the core principle of "helping humanity"

Just recently, OpenAI began offering services to some ChatGPT usersPlace adsIn an effort to balance high operating costs, Anthropic issued a statement emphasizing that its AI chatbot Claude will maintain a clean, ad-free experience. Anthropic stated that inserting ads into conversations would be incompatible with Claude's positioning as a "truly useful work and deep thinking assistant."

Contrary to ChatGPT, Anthropic promised Claude would not include any advertisements.

"Advertising will make AI creepy."

AnthropicOfficial blog postThe article points out that people often reveal a lot of personal privacy or details to chatbots. Imagine that when a user is seeking mental health advice, AI suddenly pushes ads for "St. John's wort" or antidepressant supplements based on the keywords the user entered. That feeling is not only disruptive, but it can even be "creepy".

Furthermore, for many engineers and professionals who use Claude to write complex code, do deep work, or think about difficult problems, the sudden pop-up ads can seem extremely incongruous, and in many situations, they are not inappropriate at all.

Violating the "Claude Constitution" could lead to unpredictable consequences.

Anthropic further explained that introducing an advertising mechanism would violate his famous "Claude Constitution," which lists "maintaining universal assistance" as a core principle.

From a technical standpoint, introducing advertising incentives at this stage would add another layer of complexity to the model. Anthropic admitted that the understanding of how the model translates set goals into specific behaviors is still developing, and allowing the AI system to be "advertising-driven" could lead to "unpredictable results," such as giving biased suggestions in order to earn advertising revenue.

They don't sell advertising, but they do "agency business."

Although it rejects the traditional advertising monetization model, Anthropic certainly needs to make money in the face of the AI industry's cash-burning nature.

While rejecting "ad placements," Anthropic stated that it will continue to focus on "business-based agent AI." Simply put, they will not sell ad placements, but will develop features that allow Claude to proactively assist users in "finding, comparing, or purchasing products" and connecting with businesses. This means that future monetization models may lean more towards deriving value from "completing tasks" or "facilitating transactions," rather than simply selling attention-grabbing placements.

Analysis of viewpoints

As OpenAI gradually shifts ChatGPT towards the mass consumer market (even incorporating search engine advertising), Anthropic is choosing to solidify Claude's position among "professionals" and "enterprise users." For engineers, writers, or researchers who need focused attention, an AI free from advertising and that doesn't spout nonsense to sell things is definitely more appealing than a "free but noisy" tool.

Anthropic's statement actually points out a key issue of AI ethics: "When the purpose of AI is to sell advertising, can it still objectively help you?" If AI algorithms are trained to "prioritize recommending answers from paid vendors," their credibility will collapse instantly.

Anthropic chose to avoid this pitfall and instead tackled the more technically challenging Agentic AI. Although this path is slower to generate revenue, it is undoubtedly the right step in building long-term trust.
