CNN announced the launch of its own streaming video service in 2022CNN+Then, within just one month, it was announcedTermination of operations, and earlier it was reportedNew streaming video service will be launched.
After CNN's parent company WarnerMedia and Discovery merged into a new company in 2022, some of its program content has been available for viewing through the streaming video service Max, and in October 2024, a CNN website content subscription service will be launched for US$10 per month or US$3.99 per year. However, it seems that it still plans to launch a new streaming video service earlier to attract new audience groups.
Details of the new streaming video service, which CNN plans to launch, are unclear at this time, but it may be distinct from its website and appeal to a diverse audience around the world.
When CNN+ was first launched, the market perceived a product duplication issue with CNN's streaming video service. Originally conceived, CNN+ would offer CNN's daily broadcast, along with new and original content, and even allow users to choose to play backtracked content. However, with the existing CNN app still available, offering the daily broadcast, it seemed difficult to attract users to the CNN+ service with new programming and original content. This was especially true given that many people already subscribed to streaming video services like Netflix and Disney+, and were generally hesitant to subscribe to CNN+.
According to data cited by Axios, CNN expects to spend $2021 million in 1 preparing the CNN+ subscription service, with a launch date of late March 2022. While the initial $3 million in setup costs are expected to be recouped, CNN will incur a $1 million loss due to expenses such as content copyright fees. However, CNN anticipates tripling revenue and reducing losses to $4 million in 2023, and increasing revenue to $2 million in 3 while reducing losses to $2024 million.
In terms of the number of subscribers, CNN originally expected that the number of subscribers in the global market would exceed 2024 million in 1000, and would exceed 2027 million in 2000. In 2030, it is expected to reach nearly 3000 million subscribers. However, this scale is obviously far behind services such as Netflix and Disney+, which ultimately led to CNN+ announcing the termination of operations shortly after it went online.
