Developer Cyan Worlds has announced that it will be bringing modern remasters of the classic adventure puzzle game Myst and its sequel, Riven, to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Microsoft Store. This release features significant graphical optimizations for modern consoles and full support for Sony's PlayStation VR2, allowing players to once again experience an unprecedented level of immersion on the mysterious island.
The PS5 version boasts full power and launches with PS5 Pro support for enhanced graphics.
On the PlayStation 5 platform, Mist Island and the Mist Island 2 remake offer a high degree of gameplay flexibility. Players can choose to play on a traditional 2D flat screen or enjoy a fully immersive virtual reality experience with PlayStation VR2.
Regarding hardware performance, the remastered version adds brand-new ray-traced reflections and offers a "Performance Mode" that allows players to increase the frame rate from 30fps to 60fps while sacrificing some graphics effects to ensure smooth exploration. It also supports a "Power Saver Mode" to reduce power consumption.
It's worth noting that, according to information released by the PlayStation Blog, both games are listed in the "PS5 Pro Enhanced" lineup, which will allow users to experience a more significant rendering distance, more detailed vegetation and textures, and more advanced post-processing and shadow effects via the PlayStation 5 Pro.
Xbox adds Riven to its lineup, supporting Play Anywhere.
Although the remastered version of The Isle of Mist had already been released on the Xbox platform, this update officially brings the remastered version of The Isle of Mist 2 into the Microsoft ecosystem, inheriting all the technological advantages of The Isle of Mist on this platform.
The Xbox version of Mist Island 2 will support the "Xbox Play Anywhere" feature (one-time purchase allows you to play on Xbox and Windows PC), and will also feature ray-traced reflections and a 60fps performance mode, as well as the ability to enable 4K resolution and HDR effects on supported displays.
A 3D modernization project that has lasted for many years
Cyan Worlds has been working for the past few years to modernize these two legendary 90s titles in 3D. This massive project began in 2020 when they pioneered the creation of a VR version of The Isle of Mist for the Meta Quest, transforming the world, which was originally composed of static pre-rendered images, into a freely movable 3D space for the first time.
Subsequently, non-VR versions of the game were released on PC and Mac platforms in 2021, and an iOS version was released in 2023. The remake of Mist Island 2 only started in 2024, and it has now been released on PC, Mac, and Quest platforms.
The console remasters of Mist Island and Mist Island 2 are expected to be officially released on May 19th for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Microsoft Store, with a suggested retail price of $35 each (Xbox players can already purchase Mist Island directly).
