OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced at DevDay, the annual developer conference held in San Francisco, that ChatGPT's weekly active users (WAU) have officially exceeded 8 million, once again setting a new global record for the number of people using generative AI applications.
In his opening speech, Sam Altman reviewed the growth trajectory of ChatGPT, pointing out that in 2023, OpenAI had only about 200 million developers and ChatGPT had about 1 million weekly active users. Today, both have reached 400 million developers and 8 million users, respectively. At the same time, the OpenAI API processes more than 60 billion tokens per minute, demonstrating that generative AI has become an important foundation for daily life and industrial development.
Building an application ecosystem through Apps SDK
In addition to the impressive usage data, Sam Altman also announced several developer tool updates at the conference, including two new platforms, "Apps SDK" and "AgentKit", which make it easier for developers to build applications and intelligent agent systems based on ChatGPT and OpenAI models.
Among them, the Apps SDK will help developers integrate customized application services into the ChatGPT interface, while AgentKit provides a development framework similar to an automated agent, allowing AI to make autonomous decisions and operations based on tasks.
ChatGPT service platform
Industry analysts believe that OpenAI's DevDay announcements will formally transform ChatGPT into a platform-based service, moving it from a single chat application to an open AI development ecosystem. With over 8 million users worldwide, this will not only solidify its market dominance but also potentially increase pressure on competitors like Google, Anthropic, and Meta.
At the end of his speech, Sam Altman emphasized that OpenAI's goal is not to replace developers, but to "enable everyone to use AI to create their own tools." He also revealed that more product updates in collaboration with enterprises will be released in the coming weeks.
This breakthrough growth once again confirms ChatGPT's position as the world's most popular AI platform, and also indicates that generative AI is entering a new stage centered on "tooling and scalability."
