Canon has officially dropped a bombshell in the mid-range full-frame mirrorless camera market with the release of the EOS R6 III. Compared to its predecessor...EOS R6 IIThe EOS R6 III features significant improvements in pixels, continuous shooting speed, and video recording specifications, but this comes at the cost of a higher price, and it did not incorporate a stacked image sensor as expected.
Upgraded 3250-megapixel sensor, 40fps electronic continuous shooting.
The EOS R6 III uses a newly developed 3250-megapixel full-frame (non-stacked) CMOS sensor, which is a significant improvement over the 2400-megapixel sensor of the EOS R6 II, bringing its specifications to match those of the Sony A7 IV (3300 megapixels).
With the support of the DIGIC X processor, the continuous shooting speed has been further improved:
• Electronic shutter: Up to 40 fps (supports AF/AE autofocus)
• Mechanical shutter / Electronic front curtain: Up to 12 fps
• Pre-shooting: Supports 20 frames (0.5 seconds) of pre-shooting.
Imported EOS R5 II AI autofocus algorithm, supports 7K 60p RAW Light video recording
In terms of autofocus, the EOS R6 III uses Canon's signature Dual Pixel AF system and incorporates the latest AI tracking algorithm, supporting the detection of people, animals, and vehicles, as well as an Auto mode that can automatically switch to detect targets. Its low-light focusing capability reaches -6 EV.
It is worth noting that the EOS R6 III also features the "Register People Priority" function from the flagship EOS R5 II, which allows users to pre-memorize specific subjects so that they can be focused on even in multi-person scenarios.
The biggest upgrade of the EOS R6 III is in its video recording specifications. Thanks to the improved pixel count of the image sensor, it now supports:
• 7K 60p RAW Light (Internal Recording)
• 7K 30p "Open Gate" (Full-frame playback)
• 4K 120p (presumably Super 35 cropped)
All formats are supported by Canon C-Log2 and C-Log3, and the specification sheet offers up to 12 pages of recording format options (including HEVC S, AVC-S, RAW, RAW Light, etc.). All AI subject detection features are also supported during recording.
The body design remains largely unchanged, but it now includes a CFexpress card slot and 8.5-level image stabilization.
In terms of appearance, the EOS R6 III has not changed much overall, maintaining the familiar interface layout for Canon users (top dual dials, rear dial and joystick, photo/video switching stick, etc.).
• Screen/View Window: It also uses a side-flipping screen (convenient for Vlog shooting, but may block the connection port), and does not adopt the tilting and flipping design like the Panasonic S1 II. The electronic viewfinder maintains a resolution of 369 million dots (the same level as the A7 IV).
• Card slot (major upgrade): It features a dual card slot configuration of "1 CFexpress Type B + 1 SD UHS-II" to meet the write speed requirements for 7K RAW recording and 40 fps high-speed continuous shooting.
• Anti-shake: The in-body image stabilization (IBIS) performance has been slightly improved from level 8 to level 8.5 (CIPA standard), matching the performance of Panasonic's latest models.
• Port: It features a 3.5mm microphone and headphone jack, a high-speed USB-C port, and a full-size HDMI port.
• Other professional features: A new Waveform monitor, valued by professional users, has been added, and a new focus speed algorithm derived from Canon Cinema cameras has been introduced, providing more natural and professional focus transition effects.
Bonus Feature: Lightweight and Affordable RF 45mm F1.2 STM Lens
To coincide with the launch of the EOS R6 III, Canon also introduced a highly attractive new lens, the RF 45mm F1.2 STM.
This lens achieves an extremely lightweight design at its ultra-large F1.2 aperture, weighing only 346 grams (0.76 pounds), less than half the weight of the RF 50mm f/1.2L USM. Even more surprisingly, it is priced at only US$470 (approximately NT$15000), which is incredibly competitive for an F1.2 aperture.
Pricing and Availability
The Canon EOS R6 III is expected to be officially launched later this month (November), with Taiwan expected to announce launch information in November or December.
• Body only: Suggested retail price: US$2799 (approximately NT$89500)
• Paired with RF 24-105 F4 L lens group: Suggested retail price: $4049
This price is higher than the Nikon Z6 III ($2500, with a 2400-megapixel partially stacked sensor) and lower than the Panasonic S1 II ($3200, with a 2400-megapixel partially stacked sensor and 70 fps continuous shooting). Its main competitor will be the Sony A7 IV (3300-megapixel sensor, but lacking RAW video recording capability).
