Netflix is no longer content with simply letting viewers "binge-watch"; now it wants you to pick up your remote and participate.AnnounceThe app will launch a "Live Voting" feature, which will be available alongside the live talent show that premiered on January 20th.Star SearchThe event was launched simultaneously, allowing global subscribers to become judges and decide which contestants stay and which go.
You can cast using your phone or remote control; if you miss the live stream, you'll miss it.
According to Netflix, this feature allows users to interact in real-time via TV remote or mobile app. Two voting methods are currently supported:
• Multiple choice questions:Select a specific option from the menu.
• Rating system:The performers are rated on a five-star scale.
This feature will operate "globally in sync," with the system counting votes from around the world in real time on the backend. It's important to note that this experience is highly "time-sensitive"; viewers must vote within a specific timeframe during the live stream, and the interactive window will close once the live stream ends or the voting time expires.
This means that if you are a user who watches the replay (VOD) afterward, you will not be able to participate in the voting process and will only see the results at that time.
The project has been in the works for a long time, from testing food programs to its official launch.
Actually, this feature didn't just appear out of nowhere. Back in August 2025, Netflix quietly tested a similar interactive mechanism in the reality show "Dinner Time Live with David Chang".
Netflix's Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Elizabeth Stone previewed this feature at last year's TechCrunch Disrupt 2025 conference. She stated at the time, "We want to make content more interactive over time, across TV and mobile devices. We want subscribers to feel like they're not just viewers, but part of the story, and even able to influence the plot."
From the early interactive films like *Black Mirror: Bandersnatch*,Interactive branch selection content experienceFrom the interactive TV games launched last October to the current integration of interactive mechanisms with live events such as the NFL Christmas Day game and WWE, Netflix is trying to transform "passive viewing" into "active participation".
Analysis of viewpoints
In the past, the advantage of streaming platforms was "VOD" (Video on Demand), but this also led to a lack of motivation for viewers to "watch now," making them easily distracted by social media posts or lose interest. Through a "live broadcast + voting" mechanism, Netflix has recreated the "appointment viewing" habit from the traditional television era—want to participate in the results? Then you have to be online on time.
Furthermore, this real-time interaction is an extremely valuable feature for future live sports broadcasts (such as WWE or NFL). Imagine if viewers could vote on the rules of the next match or predict the next tactic in a game during a wrestling match; this would significantly increase user engagement and even open up entirely new possibilities for future ad placements or interactive e-commerce.
