Recently announced the launch of a Mozaic 3+ platform design and HAMR technologyExos M series consumer-grade hard drives with capacities up to 32TBLater, Seagate announced the launch of the Exos M series hard drives with capacities up to 36TB for specific customers. It also announced that its 32TB capacity specification products have been introduced in cooperation with Dell Technologies and integrated into its high-density storage system products.
The Exos M series hard drives are based on Seagate's Mozaic 3+ platform and feature Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology, combined with laser heating to enable digital data to be recorded on magnetic tracks thinner than a human hair. This increases single-platter storage capacity to over 3TB and can potentially boost hard drive capacity to over 30TB.
Seagate previously stated that while the Mozaic 3+ platform design will initially be used for ultra-large-scale data center storage needs, it will also be rolled out to consumer products in the future based on market demand. This includes considering introducing this technology into 2.5-inch hard drive products that have not seen technological updates for a long time, thereby increasing the storage density of small hard drive products.
However, Seagate emphasized that the decision depends primarily on market demand. After all, current storage needs for small devices are mostly concentrated in SSDs and other flash memory storage products. Therefore, whether the Mozaic 3+ platform design will be implemented in 2.5-inch hard drive products will ultimately depend on actual application scenarios.
