The name Atlas comes from the Titans in Greek mythology who supported the sky with their shoulders. Atlas was able to achieve things that most robots at the time could not do: running on two feet, walking on uneven surfaces, and even performing parkour and backflips. It could even maintain a stable position despite external forces.
However, Boston Dynamics did not specify the reason why it decided to retire Atlas, but some market believe that this may mean that Boston Dynamics is preparing to launch a subsequent bipedal robot based on Atlas.
Boston Dynamics was first spun off from MIT and acquired by Google in 2013. In 2017, it was acquired by Softbank from Google's parent company, Alphabet, and later by South Korea's Hyundai Group in 2020.Takeover, and holds approximately 80% of its shares, while the remaining shares are indirectly held by Softbank through its subsidiaries.
