Semiconductor companies including Bosch, Infineon, Nordic Semiconductor, NXP and Qualcomm announced the establishment of a joint venture to promoteRISC-V architectureProcessor product development.
The joint venture will be headquartered in Germany and will develop commercial processor products based on the open-source RISC-V architecture. Initial applications will focus on vehicle platforms, with expansion to mobile devices and IoT platforms expected to follow. The joint venture also calls for support from industry and government agencies to promote a more resilient semiconductor ecosystem.
Compared to the Arm architecture development model, the RISC-V architecture primarily operates through an open-source instruction set and is designed to accommodate various computing components. In recent years, this has attracted numerous new entrepreneurs to develop products based on it, including small microprocessor products and large-scale AI acceleration computing components.
Semiconductor companies including Bosch, Infineon, Nordic Semiconductor, NXP, and Qualcomm have announced the formation of a joint venture, but the specific name has not yet been announced. Whether this joint venture will be formally established still needs to be evaluated and approved by regional regulatory authorities.
As for investing in the development of RISC-V architecture, it actually highlights that many semiconductor companies are worried about the change of the development model of designing products based on the Arm architecture, especially the previous news that ArmWill adjust the authorized commercial model, and may even have to be tied to Arm's Mali GPU, Ethos NPU and other architectural designs, and cannot use other third-party technology combinations. This may affect the development model of many semiconductor companies that use Arm architecture licenses to build products. Therefore, they have conceived of using RISC-V architecture as another development opportunity.
