Related reports indicate that Blue Origin, the aerospace company owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is interested in acquiring United Launch Alliance (ULA), a joint venture formed by Lockheed Martin Space Systems and Boeing Defense and Space Security, to strengthen its competition with Tesla CEO Elon Musk's aerospace company SpaceX.
United Launch Alliance (ULA) was founded in December 2006. Its primary clients are the U.S. federal government agencies served by Lockheed Martin Space Systems and Boeing Defense & Space Security, respectively, including the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and other entities. While ULA was initially established to monopolize the satellite launch market at a lower cost, NASA later signed a partnership agreement with SpaceX, which subsequently assisted the U.S. Air Force in a 12 launch of a military satellite positioning system. This has made SpaceX a major competitor to ULA.
The rumored acquisition of United Launch Alliance by Blue Origin is expected to strengthen its competitiveness against SpaceX by leveraging the latter's technological resources. However, private equity firm Cerberus and aerospace and defense manufacturer Textron also appear to be interested in acquiring ULA.
It is not yet possible to confirm whether Blue Origin can successfully acquire United Launch Alliance, and some believe that the transaction may not be completed smoothly.
