Meta launched the following in response to EU privacy regulations:€12.99 per month (about $14) billing ad-free paid subscription plan, allowing users who use the iOS or Android platform versions of Facebook and Instagram services and are over 18 years old to remove advertising interference.
This plan, currently only available within the EU, the European Economic Area, and Switzerland, allows users 18 and older to use the Facebook and Instagram services on iOS and Android platforms without ads. Meta will retain its ad-supported version of the service, allowing users who don't want to pay extra to continue using Facebook and Instagram.
In the initial usage model, the paid plan will cover all the user's linked accounts, but from March 2024, a fee of 3-6 euros will have to be paid for additional linked accounts.
In addition, Meta also plans to suspend advertising on such account-linking services from November 11th, targeting the usage patterns of teenage users.
Meta has not yet announced plans to expand its ad-free paid subscription plan to other regions. The decision to offer ad-free paid subscription plans in the EU is primarily in response to the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GPDR) and the subsequent Digital Markets and Digital Services Directives.
