Bethesda game director Todd Howard earlierWhen interviewedTodd Howard has once again updated the development progress of the highly anticipated Elder Scrolls VI. More than seven years have passed since its announcement at E3 2018, and Todd Howard still clearly states that this much-anticipated role-playing game is actually "still a long way off," advising fans to be "patient" and not to cause them anxiety.
It's already playable, and Bethesda's game director says they're "working on it every day."
Todd Howard also revealed positive progress, stating that The Elder Scrolls VI is now a "daily thing" project for him, and that he is personally serving as the director. He also revealed that the team just conducted a "big play test" on November 9th.
They admitted that announcing it in 2018 was too early, stating that the team needed a "creative reset."
Regarding why The Elder Scrolls VI was announced so early at E3 2018, Todd Howard admitted that he often reflects on whether the decision was right, and even revealed that if he could do it again, he might have announced it in a more casual way.
Bruce Nesmith, a former senior designer at Bethesda who has since left the company, revealed that Todd Howard agreed to the early announcement because fans practically stormed into his office with pitchforks and torches asking about the game's whereabouts.
This unusually long promotional period breaks with Bethesda's past traditions (such as Fallout 4, which was announced and released in just 5 months, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which was released in less than a year). Instead, it is closer to the model of Starfield, which was announced in 2018 and officially released in 2023.
Todd Howard explained that after the huge success of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the team needed a creative reset, so they decided to invest in the development of Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and Starfield.
Following in the footsteps of *The Elder Scrolls IV: Forgotten Capital Special*? Todd Howard hopes *The Elder Scrolls VI* will have a "surprise release" in the future.
Regarding future release strategies, Todd Howard seems to be more interested in the release of Virtuos, overseen by Bethesda, in April of this year. The Elder Scrolls IV: Forgotten Capitals Special Edition I'm quite satisfied with the "surprise release" mode of (The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered) (the game is currently number 5 on the US best-selling list in 2025).
Bethesda projects are packed.
In addition to The Elder Scrolls VI, Bethesda is also continuously providing new content for Fallout 76 (including Prime Video series integration), and has confirmed its involvement in the development of Fallout 5. There are also rumors that a remake of Fallout 3 is in the works.
