OnThe environmental report released earlierIn the report, Google revealed that the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the operation of its services in 2023 increased by about 2019% compared to 48 and increased by 2022% compared to 13. The reason is the increase in the proportion of artificial intelligence technology applications.

Google's greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 will increase by 2019% compared to 48 due to artificial intelligence

In addition to a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption for cooling purposes has also increased significantly to maintain stable operation of data centers. Water consumption in 2023 will increase by approximately 2022% compared to 17, consuming approximately 61 billion liters, which is enough to irrigate the area of approximately 41 golf courses in the southwestern United States each year.

The main reason why Google currently generates large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions and uses a lot of water is that it has promoted many artificial intelligence technology applications this year. At the same time, the number of users of Google search services, Google Maps, Gmail and other services has also increased significantly. Therefore, it may make Google's original goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2030 face greater challenges.

Google isn't the only company facing the challenge of increasing greenhouse gas emissions from its AI efforts; Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple are also facing similar challenges. Numerous studies and statistics indicate that compared to traditional search engines, which typically consume a certain amount of electricity and generate significant greenhouse gas emissions, current AI technology operations generate even more significant greenhouse gas emissions, and the power consumption behind them is also significantly higher.

Many believe that artificial intelligence will lead to energy usage issues. For example, electricity demand in the United States has doubled due to the development of artificial intelligence technology, and total consumption within the next two years may even exceed the current supply. Taiwan is also currently facing power supply issues, and the operation of artificial intelligence may make it difficult to maintain a stable power supply.

Therefore, the market expects that as artificial intelligence technology continues to develop, it will also drive energy technology reform and growth, and accelerate the development of green energy-related technologies.
