The Authors Guild earlier released a joint statement demanding that OpenAI, Google, Meta, Stability AI, IBM, and Microsoft not use author-created content without permission when training artificial intelligence.
The letter, sent to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta CEO Mark Zuckberg, Stability AI CEO Emad Mostak, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, has garnered more than 8500 signatures.
In the letter, the Authors Guild of America believes that technology companies have used a large amount of copyrighted books, articles, essays and poetry without authorization and "for free". At the same time, most technology companies have not disclosed the sources of their use. However, even Google has publicly stated that it uses public information on the Internet to train artificial intelligence, and there are still cases of using it without prior authorization.
Therefore, the American Authors Guild requires technology companies to obtain permission before using copyrighted works for AI training, and must provide equal compensation to authors whose works have been used for AI training. When AI operates and generates content using copyrighted works, reasonable compensation must also be provided to authors.
