As the retro gaming trend continues to heat up, Atari officially announcedA game console called Intellivision Spirit, a modern reimagining of the classic 1980s Intellivision console, is expected to ship on December 5th and will be priced at $150.
Combination of classic appearance and modern technology
The new console faithfully replicates the original 1980s design, evoking nostalgia for veteran gamers. Technically, the Intellivision Spirit is a thoroughly modern product, featuring wireless controllers and HDMI TV connectivity – features the original Intellivision lacked 40 years ago.
Built-in 45 classic games
Like retro consoles like the NES Classic (the American FC and Famicom) and the Atari 2600+, the Intellivision Spirit comes with 45 built-in classic games. The game library places a heavy emphasis on sports and strategy, the most popular genres for the Intellivision back in the day. These include the puzzle game "Boulder Dash" and the Space Invaders homage "Space Armada."
What’s special is that each game comes with an exclusive console cover film, which can be attached to the game handle to display the corresponding control method, recreating the gaming experience of that year.
The transformation of the industry from former rivals to family
This product launch is particularly noteworthy because Intellivision was once Atari's biggest competitor in the 1980s, a rivalry similar to the later Nintendo-SEGA rivalry. With Atari's official acquisition of Intellivision last year, this decades-long rivalry officially came to an end.
A clear distinction from previous generation products
It is worth noting that Intellivision Spirit is confirmed to start shipping on December 5th, which is in stark contrast to Intellivision's previous Amico game console, which was developed for many years but never successfully launched on the market. This ensures that consumers will not face the situation of "hearing the sound of footsteps but not seeing it".
As the retro gaming market continues to heat up, Atari has demonstrated its active layout in the nostalgic gaming business by reinterpreting classic products of its former competitors, and also provides old players with a new option to relive the classic gaming experience.
