The proportion of truly suitable users is not high.
Exquisite design comes at the cost of compromises
The iPhone 17 Air's biggest highlight may be Apple's thinnest design ever, and it's also expected to serve as a testbed for Apple's foldable phone strategy. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature a 6.6-inch LTPO OLED display, support 120Hz ProMotion refresh rates, MagSafe, and an A19 processor with 8GB of RAM. It will also support Apple Intelligence apps.
However, the thin body has obviously sacrificed many functions and design configurations, including the fact that the "iPhone 17 Air" only retains a single-lens main camera, and cancels the wide-angle and telephoto lenses, is equipped with only one loudspeaker, and is equipped with Apple C1's own 5G network data chip, but does not support millimeter wave (mmWave). The global sales version also cancels the SIM card slot design.
Battery life may be a concern
According to the latest leaks, the iPhone 17 Air's battery capacity may be less than 3000mAh, a significant decrease from the 16mAh in the iPhone 3651 and even less than the 25mAh in the Galaxy S3900 Edge. Even though Apple will add an AI-powered power-saving mode and high-density carbon-silicon battery technology in iOS 26, actual battery life remains unknown.
Market research suggests market reaction may be muted
A survey of 3500 iPhone users showed that only about 7.3% of them planned to upgrade to a mid-range model like the iPhone 16e. The main reasons were the lack of multi-lens function (52.6%) and preference for flagship phones (34%). If such product positioning is brought to the "iPhone 17 Air", similar consumer preference issues may be encountered.
Most sources predict that although the "iPhone 17 Air" may surpass the sales of previous Plus models, it is still expected to be far less popular than the Pro and Pro Max models.
Even the most extreme design may bring concerns about usage
In addition to the functional limitations mentioned above, netizens also pointed out that this extremely thin design may affect durability and structural strength, especially when placed in a heavy phone case or in a back pocket.
Opinion: Who is suitable to buy "iPhone 17 Air"?
The iPhone 17 Air is best suited for users who prioritize a thin and light body and whose daily usage habits can easily avoid battery anxiety. These features, in turn, will appeal to users who rely on multi-lens photography, don't require long battery life or top-tier performance, and don't even care about global network bands or SIM card usage.
If you often end the day with more than 30% battery life and your daily usage is mostly communication and browsing, then the ultra-thin and lightweight "iPhone 17 Air" may provide a comfortable user experience.
