As the year-end holidays approach, Apple has released its holiday short film, "A Critter Carol." True to Apple's tradition, the entire film was shot on the latest iPhone 17 Pro. This year's theme focuses on "unexpected friendships," and features a group of handcrafted forest animal puppets as the main characters, showcasing a heartwarming story imbued with the spirit of craftsmanship.
Story: A Fallen Cellphone and the Forest Animals' Self-Directed Act
Directed by award-winning director Mark Molloy, "A Critter Carol" tells the story of a hiker who accidentally leaves his iPhone 17 Pro in a snow-covered forest, where it is discovered by a group of curious handcrafted wooden animal figures, including a raccoon, a bear, a mouse, an owl, a deer, and a squirrel.
These little animals became "social creators," using the phone to film a joyful musical performance inspired by the PIXNET duo's song "Friends." Ultimately, when the hiker retrieved the phone using the "Find My" feature, he unexpectedly discovered the amazing footage left behind by the animals.
iPhone 17 Pro Features Showcase: 8x Zoom, Two-Way Simultaneous Shooting
The video not only tells a story but also cleverly showcases the camera capabilities of the iPhone 17 Pro. During the animals' "creation" process, features such as 8x zoom, Center Stage front-facing camera selfies, and two-way simultaneous shooting are demonstrated, highlighting how the device can help users easily create cinematic and professional-quality content.
Emphasizing the spirit of craftsmanship: the puppets and fonts are all handmade.
One of the highlights of this film is its relentless pursuit of craftsmanship. All nine puppets in the film are handcrafted using traditional techniques, aiming to imbue them with genuine personality and warmth. Even the font used in the film was hand-printed from woodblocks.
Mark Molloy stated, "I want to embrace the tactile qualities of puppetry and I really hope to return to the spirit of craftsmanship." The creative concept behind this is to continue Apple's emphasis on craftsmanship and highlight the core value of "human creativity being irreplaceable" in the AI era.
Behind-the-scenes footage released simultaneously
In addition to the main feature, Apple also released a behind-the-scenes video documenting the puppet-making process, the professional puppeteers' on-site manipulation, and how the team used the iPhone 17 Pro's features to realize their creative ideas. Lead puppeteer Tim Cherry-Jones says in the video, "Whenever we're willing to go out and create something, we can bring people together," echoing Apple's festive message: friendship is a precious gift, and creation can connect people in unexpected ways.
