Apple officiallyAnnounceThe current Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jeff Williams will retire later this year, ending his 27-year career at Apple, which means that Apple's senior management will usher in a new round of generational change. His successor will be the current head of operations, Sabih Khan, who will become the new COO from late July and take over Apple's core businesses such as supply chain, product manufacturing, quality management and global delivery.
Jeff Williams is one of the few people inside AppleOne of the executives considered a potential successor to the CEOSince joining Apple in 1998, he has been in charge of Apple's global supply chain for many years, successfully building the huge manufacturing and logistics system behind products such as the iPhone and Apple Watch. After Jony Ive left in 2019, he temporarily took over the industrial design team and shouldered the responsibility of collaborating on Apple's hardware design and manufacturing.
In a statement, Tim Cook praised Jeff Williams, emphasizing that he not only built a world-leading supply chain, but also led the team in creating the Apple Watch, driving Apple's expansion into health, and maintaining innovation within the design team. Jeff Williams stated that after completing a 27-year career spanning 40 years in the industry, he will devote more time to his family and personal life.

Sabih Khan, who has taken over the COO role, is another hands-on executive within Apple. He joined Apple in 1995 and rose through the ranks in purchasing. He once flew to China to handle an iPhone production crisis, earning him recognition as a proactive and highly capable operations leader. He will continue Jeff Williams's leadership in supply chain management, maintaining Apple's production and cost advantages amidst challenges such as the US-China trade war and a diversified supply chain.
Notably, with the retirement of Jeff Williams, Apple's Industrial Design team has undergone a restructuring. It will now report directly to Tim Cook, ending the previous model of the Chief Operating Officer leading the team. This change is being seen as a redefinition of the design team's role, a return to the CEO's direct leadership of design during the era of Apple founder Steve Jobs.
However, Apple's design strategy has been embroiled in controversy in recent years. The Vision Pro's lackluster market response, coupled with slow progress in integrating AI technology, has raised questions about whether Apple maintains its core culture of design-driven innovation. Whether Vice President of Design Alan Dye can reignite design innovation under the new leadership is also a key focus.
In fact, since Jony Ive's departure, Apple's design team has undergone numerous leadership changes, with Evans Hankey taking over as head of design before leaving in 2022. Today, the design department is no longer the sole focus of Apple's product decisions. External research also indicates that most large tech companies have been reducing their senior design management roles in recent years, gradually giving design a higher priority over operational and market needs.
With Jeff Williams' retirement, the balance of power in Apple's two core areas of operations and design will be further concentrated in Tim Cook. How Apple will strike a balance between stable operations and product innovation in the future will remain the focus of market attention.
