Apple has updated its lineup of professional external displays. In addition to the usual hardware upgrades for the popular Studio Display, such as adding Thunderbolt 5 and a 1200-megapixel camera with Desktop View, Apple has also launched the new flagship Studio Display XDR. This top-of-the-line display, which replaces the existing Pro Display XDR, features a 27-inch 5K resolution and is the first to incorporate a mini-LED display panel with 2304 local dimming zones. This not only pushes the peak brightness to 2000 nits, but also adds a 120Hz refresh rate, once again setting a new benchmark for professional videographers.
New Studio Display: Upgraded with Thunderbolt 5 and desktop view functionality
The standard version of the new Studio Display retains the 27-inch 5K Retina display specifications, with 600 nits of brightness and P3 wide color gamut, but Apple has made significant improvements in "user experience" and "expandability".
First, the built-in 1200-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens not only improves image quality but also adds a "desktop view" function, previously only available on the iPhone's connected camera, allowing creators to directly display sketches or objects on their desktop during video conferences. In terms of audio, the new Studio Display features a studio-grade three-microphone array and a six-speaker system supporting spatial audio, delivering 30% better bass performance than its predecessor.
The most crucial upgrade is the addition of a Thunderbolt 5 port. With a transmission bandwidth of up to 120Gbps, users can now connect up to four Studio Displays via Daisy-chain and simultaneously receive up to 96W of charging power, perfectly meeting the fast charging needs of the 14-inch MacBook Pro.
Studio Display XDR: A Powerful Demonstration of Image Quality and Refresh Rate
The absolute highlight of this announcement is undoubtedly the newly launched Studio Display XDR, which inherits the high dynamic range lineage of the previous Pro Display XDR, but condenses the size to a more popular 27-inch 5K resolution specification, and brings a stunning panel revolution.
2000 nits brightness mini-LED panel: Utilizing a mini-LED backlight module with up to 2304 local dimming zones, it provides an ultimate contrast ratio of 1000000:1. Not only is the SDR brightness increased to 1000 nits, but the HDR peak brightness also reaches an astonishing 2000 nits, accurately eliminating blooming effects.
Dual wide color gamut support: In addition to the P3 wide color gamut commonly used in the Apple ecosystem, Apple has added Adobe RGB support (Rec. 2020 coverage of over 80%), which is highly sought after by the professional printing and design industries. Both can be seamlessly switched through default settings, greatly simplifying the workflow of colorists and graphic designers.
120Hz Adaptive Sync: Finally, external displays have caught up with the MacBook Pro. The Studio Display XDR supports a 120Hz refresh rate and offers a variable refresh rate from 47Hz to 120Hz through Adaptive Sync, providing an extremely smooth visual experience whether editing high frame rate videos or performing heavy 3D rendering.
In addition, the Studio Display XDR also features a 1200-megapixel camera and a six-speaker system. Its Thunderbolt 5 port provides up to 140W of charging power, enough to power a fully loaded 16-inch MacBook Pro. Apple has also introduced DICOM medical imaging presets for the medical field and will release a medical imaging calibrator pending FDA approval.
