In 2018, Apple, Pixar, and Adobe collaborated to createOpen file format USDZNVIDIA, Pixar, Adobe, Autodesk, Siemens and other companies will followCollaboration to promote the USD standardAfterwards, it was announced that it would jointly establish the OpenUSD Alliance with the Joint Development Foundation (JDF), an affiliate of the Linux Foundation, to promote the development of 3D content development standards.
The alliance aims to enhance the functionality of OpenUSD (Open Universal Scene Description) to drive standardization within the 3D ecosystem, enabling greater interoperability between 3D creation tools and data, enabling developers and content creators to describe, author, and produce large-scale 3D projects, and to build an ever-expanding range of 3D products and services.
Created by Pixar Animation Studios, OpenUSD is a high-performance 3D scene description technology that provides interoperability across tools, data, and workflows. Known for its ability to capture artistic expression and streamline film content production, OpenUSD's power and flexibility make it an ideal content platform for emerging industries and applications.
The consortium will develop a written specification detailing OpenUSD's functionality. This will enable greater compatibility and wider adoption, integration, and implementation, and allow other standards bodies to incorporate it into their own specifications. This project will be led by the Linux Foundation's JDF, which will enable open, efficient, and effective development of the OpenUSD specification while assisting in achieving International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification.
The OpenUSD Alliance will jointly define the direction for improving OpenUSD technology for the entire industry, and invite many companies and organizations to join and participate in shaping the future development of OpenUSD.
"Universal Scene Description (USD), invented by Pixar, is the foundation of our state-of-the-art animation pipeline. OpenUSD builds on years of Pixar research and application in film production," said Steve May, Pixar's Chief Technology Officer and Chairman of AOUSD. "We open-sourced the project in 2016, and now OpenUSD's influence has expanded to film, visual effects, animation, and other industries that increasingly rely on 3D data for media exchange. With the announcement of AOUSD, we unveil an exciting next step: the continued development of OpenUSD's technology and its adoption as an international standard."
“At Adobe, we’re committed to providing artists with a flexible and powerful set of solutions that run on a wide range of devices,” said Guido Quaroni, senior director of engineering at Adobe 3D&I. “Leveraging universal 3D data in the creative process increases the value of every software suite and device. OpenUSD was created to be one of these multipliers, and it’s exciting to see such a diverse group of companies coming together to support this innovative and open technology.”
“OpenUSD will help accelerate the next generation of augmented reality experiences, from artistic creation to content presentation, and enable an ever-expanding range of spatial computing applications,” said Mike Rockwell, vice president of Apple’s Visual Products team. “Apple has been an active contributor to the development of Universal Scene Description, a key technology in our groundbreaking VisionOS platform and the new Reality Composer Pro development tool. We look forward to fostering its development into a widely adopted standard.”
“Whether you’re building CG worlds and digital twins, or planning 3D networks, content creators need a cohesive way to collaborate and share data across tools, services, and platforms,” said Gordon Bradley, Researcher, Media and Entertainment, Autodesk. “Autodesk is excited to support the OpenUSD Consortium as it drives 3D interoperability for visual effects, animation, and more, supporting our vision of helping customers design and create a better world.”
“OpenUSD provides a complete foundation for 3D developers, artists, and designers to address large-scale industrial, digital content creation, and simulation workloads through broad, multi-application interoperability,” said Guy Martin, Director of Open Source and Standards at NVIDIA. “This alliance is a unique opportunity to accelerate global OpenUSD collaboration by establishing formal cross-industry standards and initiatives to achieve the goal of digitizing the 3D world and industry.”
OpenUSD聯盟指導委員會成員將於8月6日學院軟體基金會的開源日,以及台灣時間8月9日上午4點於SIGGRAPH大會中Autodesk Vision Series上發表演講。
