In his latest "Power On" column, Bloomberg News reporter Mark Gurman notes that Apple has made significant progress in non-invasive blood glucose monitoring technology, enabling diabetics to measure their blood sugar levels without piercing their skin. However, Gurman believes Apple may need more time to prepare for a commercially viable product.
In February of this year, Mark Gurman reported that Apple had added a non-invasive blood glucose monitoring function to the Apple Watch.Has entered the proof-of-concept stage, which uses laser to measure subcutaneous blood sugar concentration, thereby achieving the purpose of non-invasive data reading.
However, the hardware required to build this technology using Apple's current technology is still quite large, and it will likely take considerable time to refine it before it can be implemented in the Apple Watch. Earlier reports by Mark Gurman revealed that Apple must refine its current algorithms and sensor designs, and that miniaturizing the hardware for this technology may require an additional three to seven years.
Blood sugar measurement will allow diabetic patients to better understand their physical condition, prevent their condition from worsening, and help them manage their personal lifestyle habits more easily.
Currently, approximately 10% of the U.S. population suffers from diabetes. Monitoring blood sugar levels typically requires blood sampling through skin puncture. This has attracted many companies hoping to create simpler blood sugar measurement methods, thereby creating a market value of up to tens of billions of dollars.
