As previously rumored and as its name was accidentally leaked earlier, Apple officially announced the new 13-inch MacBook Neo at the "Apple Experience" special events held in New York, London, and Shanghai. It will be available in four colors: silver, indigo, blush pink, and orange-yellow. It was also confirmed that the processor is the same A18 Pro processor used in the iPhone 16 Pro series and can run AI services including Apple Intelligence. The price is also as rumored, at $599.
Pricing is the same as the iPhone 17e and the M4 version of the iPad Air, overturning previous Mac pricing strategies.
With the comprehensive deployment of Apple Intelligence, Apple clearly hopes to attract more users to its AI ecosystem through more affordable hardware prices. Therefore, the MacBook Neo not only meets the hardware specifications to run Apple Intelligence, but is also priced at a more convincing $599 (NT$19900 in the Taiwan market), making it competitive with entry-level Windows PCs or Chromebooks.
The positioning of the MacBook Neo inevitably brings to mind Apple's previous 12-inch MacBook with Intel Core M processors. At that time, it was designed with low power consumption, lightweight and easy portability in a small size, and offered gold, gray and silver color options. It did attract a lot of attention at the time, but the starting price of $1299 was not very affordable.
Therefore, Apple chose to further lower product prices by switching to the A18 Pro processor and adopting the iMac's colorful design strategy, along with a more rounded appearance. At the same time, it can also provide longer battery life while maintaining a certain level of computing performance by leveraging the characteristics of the Arm architecture, which is expected to attract more people.
Four vibrant colors and durable aluminum alloy design
The MacBook Neo features a durable aluminum alloy casing with smooth rounded corners, giving it a solid feel and a weight of only 2.7 pounds (about 1.22 kg), making it very easy to carry in a backpack or handbag.
To inject more personal style into everyday computing, the MacBook Neo offers four vibrant color options: silver, indigo, blush, and a new citrus. The color scheme extends to the light-colored keycaps of the Magic Keyboard and the new exclusive wallpapers, making it the most colorful MacBook Apple has ever produced.
In terms of display, the MacBook Neo features a 13-inch Liquid Retina Display with a high resolution of 2408 x 1506 and 500 nits of brightness, supporting 10 billion colors to deliver crisp, sharp text and vivid, lifelike images. The screen surface is covered with an anti-reflective coating, allowing users to comfortably view content in various lighting conditions.
For video and audio, the MacBook Neo features a 1080p FaceTime HD webcam optimized for image processing, and beamforming dual microphones that reduce background noise and highlight the user's voice. Additionally, dual side speakers supporting Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos are located on either side of the keyboard for an immersive audio experience.
A18 Pro Performance: Quiet Operation and 16 Hours of Battery Life
The A18 Pro processor, which serves as the core of the computing power, enables the MacBook Neo to demonstrate its powerful capabilities in handling everyday tasks and AI applications. This is also the first time that Apple has used the A-series processors, which have previously been touted as having desktop-level computing performance, in a Mac model.
• Daily efficiency:For everyday tasks such as web browsing, it is 50% faster than the best-selling PCs currently equipped with the latest Intel Core Ultra 5.
• Device-side AI:When performing device-level AI workloads such as advanced photo effects, its performance is 3 times higher than that of competing products; and it also has a 2x speed improvement in general photo editing tasks.
• Neural network engine:With a built-in 16-core neural network engine, it can quickly and securely perform Apple Intelligence functions, such as summarizing notes or using the "clean up" tool for photos, while ensuring user data privacy.
• Heat dissipation and battery life:Thanks to the energy efficiency of Apple Silicon processors, the MacBook Neo features a fanless design, operating completely silently. A single charge provides up to 16 hours of battery life, enough for a full day's use.
Full range of ports and macOS system experience
On the input interface, in addition to the comfortable and precise Magic Keyboard, there is a large multi-touch trackpad that supports intuitive gestures; some models are equipped with Touch ID fingerprint recognition (only available on the 512GB storage version), providing fast and secure login and Apple Pay authentication authorization.
In terms of connectivity, the MacBook Neo features two USB-C ports that both support charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6 connectivity.
On the software side, it comes pre-installed with the powerful macOS 26 Tahoe operating system, featuring Apple Intelligence functions such as writing tools and real-time translation, and seamlessly integrates with iPhone's "Handoff" and other connected experiences. Users can easily complete tasks across devices through features such as Handoff, Universal Clipboard, or iPhone Mirroring.
Pricing and Availability
The MacBook Neo is also made with 60% recycled materials in its eco-friendly design (including a 90% recycled aluminum metal casing and a 100% recycled cobalt battery), making it Apple's MacBook product with the lowest carbon footprint to date.
The standard price of the MacBook Neo starts at $599, with an education discount starting at $499. Pre-orders are open now in 30 countries and regions, including the United States, with official sales expected to begin on March 11. The suggested retail price in Taiwan starts at NT$19900, but the release date has not yet been confirmed.
Analysis of viewpoints
Apple's launch of the MacBook Neo at $599 is set to shake up the entry-level PC market. By incorporating the A18 Pro processor, this laptop not only boasts a fanless, silent design and up to 16 hours of battery life, but also significantly lowers the barrier to entry for the macOS experience.
For students, ordinary families, small business owners, or first-time Mac users, this is a product that achieves an excellent balance between cost-effectiveness and quality, and will become the most important strategic weapon for promoting the popularization of Apple Intelligence.
