Apple released a new research report by Andrey Fradkin, professor of economics at Boston University's Questrom School of Business, and Dr. Jessica Burley of Analysis Group, which pointed out that Apple's App Store ecosystem will reach 2024 billion in the world by XNUMX.Driven $1.3 trillion in developer revenue and sales, more than 90% of the revenue is obtained by developers, and no commission is required to be paid to Apple, indicating that its business model is developing towards diversification.
“We’re thrilled to see developers around the world using the App Store to create innovative apps that not only enrich users’ lives but also generate substantial commercial value,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “This research further demonstrates that the App Store is not only a platform for technological innovation, but also a vital venue for global entrepreneurship and creativity.”
The study indicates that developers will generate $2024 billion in revenue from digital goods and services in 1310, with games, video editing, and business tools being the primary drivers of revenue. Meanwhile, revenue from physical goods and services will exceed $1 trillion, driven particularly by the growth in online demand for food delivery, grocery delivery, and other services.
As for in-app advertising revenue, it also increased to US$1500 billion, and display advertising is still the lifeblood of revenue for many free apps.
Apple emphasized that this growth trend has been evident since 2019, with overall revenue more than tripling over the past five years. Physical services saw a particularly impressive 2.6-fold increase, highlighting the rapid expansion of mobile commerce. Meanwhile, apps supporting creators, such as video editing tools, are also experiencing steady growth alongside the rise of the content economy.
In terms of global market performance, the App Store ecosystems in the United States, China, and Europe have doubled their overall revenue over the past five years.
In the United States, mobile payment spending has grown more than sevenfold since 2019, while online grocery spending in China has increased fivefold. In Europe, demand for delivery services has driven a threefold increase. Furthermore, in the Asia-Pacific region, travel apps have become a major consumer focus in markets like Japan and India.
Apple also emphasized its ongoing support for the developer community. Whether it's development tools like Xcode and TestFlight, or promotional resources like App Analytics and Product Page Optimization, these tools help developers more efficiently create and optimize apps. Furthermore, Apple has established developer centers and academies around the world, providing multilingual technical support and resources to further drive innovation.
Before WWDC 2025 begins, Apple is stating that its App Store can still help more developers create revenue opportunities. In addition to hoping to attract more people to join the Apple platform to create application services, it is obviously also hoping to reverse the market's perception of it by explaining how the App Store can drive greater content revenue opportunities.
