Apple is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary on April 1st. On the eve of this historic moment, CEO Tim Cook gave a rare in-depth interview to CBS Sunday Morning correspondent David Pogue, reflecting on his 28-year journey with Apple and revealing his farewell conversation with founder Steve Jobs.

Apple celebrates its 50th anniversary: Tim Cook looks back on the past 28 years and reveals the inside story of the founder's "Don't ask me what I'll do" succession strategy.

Tim Cook emphasized that Apple's success is not simply due to patents or technology, but rather to its deeply ingrained corporate culture and core principles. Back then, to prevent Apple from falling into a "Disney-like" decision-making paralysis, Steve Jobs left behind the key advice: "Do the right thing, and don't ask me how."

Forget the cautious "best decision": Join Apple in its darkest hour.

In the interview, Tim Cook recalled his time at Apple 28 years ago. At the time, he was working at Compaq, the world's largest personal computer company, and almost everyone around him was trying to persuade him to leave. Tim Cook admitted that Apple was "frankly very bleak" at the time, not only facing a cash shortage and the predicament of not being able to pay salaries, but also having its revenue shrink to only about one billion US dollars per quarter, and completely lost its direction after losing Steve Jobs.

However, when Steve Jobs returned and, against all odds, decided to fully commit resources to the "consumer" market rather than the "enterprise" market that the industry was blindly pursuing at the time, Tim Cook was deeply moved. During his first meeting with Steve Jobs, he was captivated by Jobs' unique passion for products and his worldview, ultimately deciding to "put caution aside" and join Apple. Tim Cook emotionally stated that before joining Apple at 38, he seemed to lack a true purpose in life, and this decision gave him immense meaning, making it "the best decision" he had ever made.

Steve Jobs' parting advice: Don't let Apple become "the next Disney".

Since taking over as CEO in 2011, Tim Cook's starkly different leadership style from Steve Jobs has been a hot topic of discussion. When discussing the handover arrangements, Tim Cook revealed a profound farewell conversation.

Before his death, Steve Jobs called Tim Cook to his home and told him clearly, "Never ask what I would do, just do the right thing."

Tim Cook explained that this suggestion was driven by a deep sense of caution. Because of Steve Jobs's long-standing relationship with Disney (he was Pixar's largest shareholder and served on Disney's board of directors), he witnessed firsthand how Disney, after the death of its founder Walt Disney, suffered a prolonged period of decision-making paralysis due to the internal question, "What would Walt Disney have done?" Steve Jobs was determined to prevent Apple from repeating this mistake; he desired a professional and orderly transfer of power, rather than the panic and crisis that often accompanied past changes in Apple's top management.

It was this advice that allowed Tim Cook to shed the heavy burden of "imitating Steve Jobs" and focus on becoming the best version of himself.

Apple's 50-year-old DNA and its "partying alone" corporate culture

While Tim Cook no longer fixates on "what Steve Jobs would have done," Steve Jobs' ideas have long been ingrained in Apple's corporate DNA. Tim Cook summarized these enduring core principles:

• Collaboration and Debate:I believe that sharing and heated debate can elevate ideas, such as "1 plus 1 equals 3, not 2".

• Extreme focus:Knowing how to ruthlessly say "no" to thousands of temptations and choices in order to achieve truly crucial goals.

• Pursuing "crazy good":It's not enough to just be "good"; the product must be "insanely great."

• The perfect intersection of hardware, software, and services:By mastering the deep integration of its own hardware, software and services, it creates "magic" for users.

• Always put the user first:They have an extreme passion and obsession with user experience.

Beyond legacy, Tim Cook also infused Apple with his own new values. In the interview, he emphasized inclusivity, accessibility, viewing privacy as a fundamental human right, education, and environmental sustainability. Tim Cook believes that a company, as a collection of people, should possess and practice these social values.

When asked why Silicon Valley experiences frequent talent turnover yet no other company has been able to successfully replicate Apple's success model, Tim Cook stated bluntly, "Apple's secret lies in 'talent and culture.'" He believes that while patents and technology are important, ultimately, it is culture that drives innovation. This culture requires a long time to accumulate, nurture, and pass on; it cannot be built overnight. This is why Apple has always been "in a party of one" in the industry.

It's worth mentioning that David Pogue, who conducted this interview with Tim Cook, is also the author of the upcoming book, which will be published at the end of March. The Apple Way: 50 Years of Redefining the WorldThe author of "Apple: The First 50 Years" will fully record Apple's ups and downs and legendary journey over the past half-century.

Analysis of viewpoints

Looking back at Apple's development over the past 50 years, this interview with Tim Cook is undoubtedly the most profound self-analysis of the "post-Steve Jobs era".

For over a decade, Tim Cook has been compared to Steve Jobs, with many arguing that Cook lacked the "world-changing" reality distortion field, instead offering calm, precise operations and supply chain management. However, this interview clearly shows that Steve Jobs' most valuable legacy to Apple was never a specific hardware product, but rather the decision-making freedom granted by the phrase "do the right thing," and a fundamental operating system that strives for excellence—"corporate culture."

Tim Cook cleverly preserved Steve Jobs' "product fervor" as the company's core DNA, while simultaneously adding new dimensions that align with contemporary corporate social responsibility (ESG), privacy protection, and accessible design. This has transformed Apple from a tech company that simply sells cool devices into a super brand with a powerful social impact. Facing the future wave of AI and various antitrust regulations, this invisible moat built by "talent and culture" may be Apple's greatest asset, allowing it to continue "partying alone" for the next 50 years.
