Apple announced at WWDC 6 in June last yearNew CarPlay design, claiming that CarPlay will be able to integrate more modern vehicle functions and support multi-screen display output. It was originally expected to be launched at the end of 2022, but the time was later adjusted to before the end of 2023. However, as December of 2023 is approaching, Apple still does not seem to be ready to announce the specific launch of the new CarPlay.
Currently, Apple’s official website still states that “applicable models will be announced later in 2023.” It is uncertain whether it will be announced to the public in the near future, or whether the official website may update the information again.
In a previous announcement, Apple said it would collaborate with automakers such as Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, NISSAN, Ford, Lincoln, Audi, Jaguar, Acura, Volvo, Honda, Renault, Infinity, and Polestar on a new version of CarPlay. This new version will be able to take advantage of the digital dashboards on smart cars, not only matching the specifications of each type of dashboard screen, but also utilizing multiple screens to display different driving content, and even allowing users to customize the interface and color scheme to their personal preferences.
Apple has also brought the widget features from iOS and macOS to the CarPlay interface. This more user-friendly interface allows users to more conveniently access various vehicle functions, such as adjusting the air conditioning, displaying current speed, and viewing vehicle information. Naturally, the interactive interface also supports Siri, allowing users to directly control vehicle functions while maintaining a forward-looking gaze.
However, at this stage, Apple still allows users to connect to the car system through the iPhone, and can only use the app content corresponding to the CarPlay interface and basic functions such as the Siri digital assistant service.
Some speculate that this may be because most car manufacturers are still unwilling to open up their in-car systems, which has caused many obstacles for Apple to promote the new CarPlay interface.
