Apple and Nokia earlier continuedCommunications technology-related patent agreements signed since 2017, which covers the application scope of 5G networking technology.
The two parties completed the renewal with about half a year left in the agreement signed in 2017. Apple will pay for the renewal content starting in January 2024.
Apple and Nokia sued in late 2016, with Apple arguing that Nokia was charging excessive patent fees and refusing to pay any further royalties. Nokia subsequently filed lawsuits against Apple in 11 countries, including Germany and the United States, alleging infringement on 32 patents related to video encoding, chip design, antenna design, and display design. The lawsuit was subsequently expanded to 40 countries worldwide, with the court seeking an injunction prohibiting Apple from importing and selling infringing products into the US market.
Finally, the two parties reached a settlement in 2017 and signed a new patent usage agreement.
Between 2009 and 2010, before Nokia's mobile phone business was acquired by Microsoft, it launched a series of infringement lawsuits against Apple, covering technologies such as the Global Mobile Communications System, camera control subsystem and touch input, and accused products such as the iPhone and iPad of infringement. Apple retaliated by accusing Nokia of infringing on 13 of its technology patents, but the two parties signed a cross-licensing agreement in 2011 to reach a settlement.
